Music Festival Promotes Building Community Through Gardening ...

2009 Sept7 AFTERmusicfestiv Music Festival Promotes Building Community Through Gardening And Local Food

Hanging out, picnicking, and listening to great music makes for a great
Spring Saturday. Add to that a focus on sustainability, gardening, and
feeding communities, and you have Grow and Share?s Giveaway & Festival 2012!
Norris Creek comes alive with local music, plant giveaways, tasty treats,
and much to see. The Giveaway & Festival 2012 helps local residents start
growing their own food, raises awareness of food issues, and acts as a
fundraiser for local nonprofit Grow And Share.

This free music festival opens at Noon on Saturday, April 14th. The lineup
of live bands starts with Steph Stewart and the Boyfriends, followed by Old
Avenue
, and then Jo Gore and The Alternative. Between bands, performers keep
the crowd entertained. Tasty foods and snacks will be available throughout
the event. The Giveaway & Festival 2012 wraps up just before 5pm.

Grow And Share helps communities fight hunger through gardening education
and a focus on community food sharing. They educate community members on how
to care for their neighborhoods from within through local food growth.
Plants provided to gardeners during the event include tomatoes, peppers,
cucumbers, melons, and more. Plants are free of charge to gardeners who sign
a Pledge To Share promising to grow more than they need and share food with
neighbors, strangers, and food banks. Neighborhood and Community Garden
members may also sign the Pledge To Share if their gardens are designed to
share free produce locally.

The festival is moving from its previous Rolesville, NC location to the
Norris Creek Outdoor Entertainment Complex. Norris Creek is a scenic
50-acre event location convenient to Zebulon, Louisburg, Wake Forest,
Knightdale, and Bunn. Its immense stage, natural amphitheatre, and acres of
parking make it the ideal location for this combination music festival and
garden plant giveaway.

?Norris Creek Outdoor Entertainment Complex offers a large, natural
environment for our festival,? says Kay Whatley, Creative Director of Grow
And Share. ?With the expansion of the festival to include our Garden Plant
Giveaway, we expect to draw a great crowd of gardeners, families, and
socially conscious local residents.?

Vendors offer a variety of locally made and specialty goods. Other
nonprofits will share information on their community services. And, several
vendor booths will be ?gardening education stations? to learn from expert
gardeners and even play in the dirt! Inter-Faith Food Shuttle?s Nutrition
Education Programs will be present to talk about gardening, nutrition, and
healthy foods.

Sponsors of Grow And Share?s Giveaway & Festival 2012 include ?The Grey
Area? newspaper and the Zebulon Chamber Of Commerce. Said Chamber
spokesperson Kathy Cockrell, ?The Zebulon Chamber of Commerce is proud to
partner with Grow and Share, a Chamber member for nearly three years, in
planning their annual Music Festival and Spring Giveaway. This event will be
fun for the whole community AND will bring much-needed fresh-grown food to
local tables.?
