The Little Black Box Desktop [Featured Desktop]

The Little Black Box Desktop Flickr user Sebastian Holm Nielsen wanted a desktop that was both inspiring and functional, but still stayed out of his way when it was time to work, so this semi-minimal setup sprung to mind. A single widget-loaded status bar at the bottom of his display shows him whatever he needs to see, and when it's time to work, he doesn't have widgets or tools peeking out around his windows.

Want the same look for your Windows 7 desktop? Here's what you'll need:

  • The Toy City wallpaper
  • The Rainmeter system configuration and monitoring tool for Windows
  • The Enigma suite for Rainmeter (included) for the Launcher and Now Playing widgets
  • The Obsidian skins for Rainmeter for the status bar icons and clock
  • The Omnimo UI for Rainmeter to create the status bar, and all of the built-in widgets (Wi-Fi network and signal strength, current weather, CPU, RAM, Recycle Bin)
  • The Launchy application launcher for Windows so the Taskbar stays hidden forever

The whole process took Sebastian about a half-hour, and he goes into more detail about how he made it at his Flickr page if you're not sure how to make his desktop your own. If you drop by, let him know how much you liked his work! If you're still having trouble, check out our guide to Rainmeter for extra hints and tips.

Do you have a beautiful, creative, and functional desktop to share with the world? Submit it to the Lifehacker Desktop Show and Tell Flickr Group! Please include a description of how you made it - without that, we can't tell others how to make it for themselves. Do these things, and it may just be the next featured desktop!
