Assistant Coach Fired After "Inappropriately" Texting Teen

Stroudsburg, Monroe County - An assistant Stroudsburg High School football coach has been sacked for allegedly sending inappropriate texts to at least one teenage girl.?

It appears 24-year-old Matthew Hagelgans was fired just before the school year started this week.

The assistant coach also spent time as a history teacher at the school but the Superintendent said Hagelgans was not working as a teacher when he was fired.

A police officer stationed in the school learned that Hagelgans was texting at least one teen girl. School board members and police would not comment on what exactly the messages contained.

The school board found some texts to be "inappropriate" but no one would elaborate.

Police noted that just because something is inappropriate does not mean that it is illegal. Something like sharing nude photos would be clearly illegal but sources at the school say that does not appear to be involved here.

Eyewitness News talked to some members of the football team who did not want to share their names. They said Hagelgans was a nice guy and a good Assistant Coach. They said they couldn't really form an opinion on this text messaging issue until they knew exactly what was said in the texts.

Other students had a lot to say. Junior Taffy Robertson said,"A teacher shouldn't be texting a student at all because I feel it's not really appropriate because, they are a professional relationship. It doesn't matter if they were talking about homework. If that's the case, they should have had emails or met in person."

A surprising number of kids blamed the girl, or girls, involved. Tatiana Williams said,"She knows the situation the teacher would be in as well and her jeopardizing the teachers job, and she's the student."

Hagelgans does not have a listed phone number. Eyewitness News reached out to him through his Twitter and Facebook pages. He did not respond. But a tweet on his feed said he was "distraught" and that he wants his job back.

Hagelgans Twitter page was no longer online Monday afternoon.

Police did not say how long they expect their investigation to take.
