"Geniuses Are Made, Not Born" [Quotables]

"Geniuses Are Made, Not Born"The phrase "born genius" is deceptive. Although genes definitely play a role in intelligence, genius is also the result of a tremendous amount of work. That's the theme of this quote, the title of a post from The Creativity Post blog.

One of the most stubborn brain myths is that we're all stuck at the intelligence level we were born with, when actually IQ can change and be improved with effort. Many of our greatest artists and scientists demonstrated brilliance only after honing their craft through thousands of hours of practice and study.

Scott Barry Kaufman writes on The Creativity Post:

Genius involves figuring out who you are, and owning yourself. It's about amplifying your best traits and compensating for the rest. Geniuses grab life by the horns, and persevere amidst setbacks. They take control of their lives, instead of waiting for others to open up doors. In this very important sense, greatness is completely, utterly, made.

It's a great reminder that what matters most is the deliberate practice we put into our work.

10 Non-Dairy Sources of Calcium - Bootique Fitness - San Diego ...

collard greens 10 Non Dairy Sources of Calcium

These days, more and more people are discovering that they have food allergies. Most food allergies come from just 7 food sources: milk (lactose), eggs, nuts (mostly peanuts), fish, shellfish, soy and wheat (gluten). Lactose intolerance is a growing issue for many people.

For some, completely cutting out dairy is the only option to reduce the amount of stress on their digestive system. If you're one of those people, you may be wondering how you can get your daily source of calcium in the absence of dairy. Luckily, there are many other foods that will give you a significant amount of calcium to make up for the lack of dairy in your diet.

Calcium is essential.

A constant level of calcium in the body is necessary to aid various functions including muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction and expansion, and sending messages through the nervous system. Simply put: calcium is needed to keep your heart working and your muscles functioning. Even with all that importance placed calcium's role in the body, the body stores just 1% of it in places other than bones and teeth. Ideally, most of us build up calcium reserves in our bones and teeth during childhood and that reserve acts as a bank from which to draw from in our adult years. Still, adults are recommended to get at least 1000 mg of calcium daily. So, if you choose not to have dairy, what is the best way to get your daily source of calcium?

11 non-dairy food sources with a significant amount of calcium.

  • Collard greens 1 cup, boiled - 357 mg
  • Fortified soymilk 1 cup - 368 mg
  • Black-eyed peas 1 cup, boiled - 211 mg
  • Firm tofu (made with calcium sulfate) 1/2 cup - 204 mg
  • Calcium-fortified orange juice 6 oz - 200 mg
  • Blackstrap molasses 1 Tbsp - 172 mg
  • Baked beans 1 cup, canned - 154 mg
  • Kale 1 cup, cooked - 94 mg
  • Chinese cabbage 1 cup, raw - 74 mg
  • Oranges 1 cup - 72 mg
  • Almonds 1 oz - 70 mg

Simple ways to add these foods into your diet to increase your calcium intake.

    • Stir-fry vegetables and add diced tofu made with calcium sulfate.
    • Add calcium-rich greens like collards and kale to casseroles, soups, stews and pasta dishes.
    • Use calcium-fortified non-dairy milk (like soy or almond milk) instead of water in recipes such as mashed potatoes, pudding and oatmeal.
    • Factor in some sweetness (and calcium) with blackstrap molasses into your oatmeal, grits or other morning meal.
    • Use almond butter instead of peanut butter to add more calcium.
    • Beans, a calcium super food, can be added to soups, pasta sauces, salads and burritos.
    • Enjoy canned baked beans, which are usually fortified with calcium, as a side dish, or mix them into your favorite recipes.

If you are still not meeting your daily required calcium needs in the food that you eat, you may want to consider taking a calcium supplements. When picking a supplement that is right for you, remember to:

    • Compare the brands by the amount of elemental calcium they contain, which should be clearly listed on the label.
    • Choose a brand you trust. Although generic brands may be cheaper, they might be a lower quality and might not be absorbed as well.
    • Look for the "USP" label, which indicates that the supplement has met the standards of the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) for quality, purity and tablet disintegration or dissolution.
    • Do not use calcium supplements made with unrefined oyster shell, bone meal or dolomite as they may also contain toxic substances.

There are more tips outside of eating right and taking supplements that will help you reach your daily calcium intake goal.

Reduce sodium in your diet. Elevated levels of sodium in the blood can cause your body to compensate by pulling more calcium from your bones to maintain balance. The less amount of calcium in your bones, the more likely you are to be deficient.

Eat your veggies. Yep. No matter what you cannot get away form eating more vegetables. Beside their rich calcium content, many vegetables and fruits are good sources of potassium; which may help decrease calcium excretion in people who eat high sodium diets (which is especially good for postmenopausal women).

Exercise. Yep again. You can't get away from exercise. Weight bearing exercises like walking, running, hiking and boot camp workouts can put stress on your bones. That is a good thing because that act will cause your body to respond by making your bones stronger.

Load up on Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important because it helps improve calcium absorption. Luckily for us in San Diego, sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D (just remember sunscreen). Of course, food is another source as well. Cod liver oil, salmon, mackerel, tuna, and fortified breakfast cereals provide Vitamin D effectively. And ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure is all you need to get almost a day's worth of this vitamin as well.

Don't let your need to avoid dairy cause a calcium deficiency. Use these recommended calcium-loaded foods to keep your bones strong, your heart working and you muscles functioning.

BILL CLINTON TO INTRODUCE MITT ROMNEY | Weekly World News

Bill Clinton has accepted an invitation to introduce Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention this evening.

Clinton is getting a prime-time speaking slot at the Republican convention this evening.? There was speculation that Clint Eastwood would be the ?surprise speaker? but it?s not ?Clint? it?s ?Clinton? that is the big surprise.

?President Clinton oversaw the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, pursuing many of the same policies that Mitt Romney is advocating,? reportedly said Mike Huckabee, a longtime friend of Bill Clinton.? ?As a former governor, he?s the perfect choice to introduce Mitt Romney, and I think he?s going to electrify the crowd.?

Clinton plans to discuss the economy, when he formally introduces Romney before his acceptance speech.

Obama strategist David Axelrod is not concerned about Clinton introducing Romney.? ?I think the RNC is making a big mistake, assuming they know what Bill will say.? We all know he fully supports President Obama, so I would be very nervous if I was in that room this evening.?

Clinton has become close to former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George Bush and has reportedly been ?leaning Republican? for years.? ?He feels that the Democratic Party has gone too far to the left and he has no choice but to join the Republican party,? said a close friend of Clinton?s.

Bill Clinton is particularly close to George W. Bush and they will reportedly campaign together for Mitt Romney.

The Romney-Bill Clinton relationship has always been a smooth one and the two men reportedly get along very well.? Bill is also quite fond of Mitt?s wife, Ann:

Last night, Clinton appeared briefly on stage with Paul Ryan ? several hours before Ryan made his acceptance speech.

Earlier this year, Clinton raised eyebrows by saying that Romney had a ?sterling? business career and appearing to question Obama?s attacks on it.

Some say that Bill Clinton has been undermining Barack Obama?s re-election bid, but he has been doing it in a subtle manner. Not tonight.? Bill Clinton will reportedly make it known exactly how he feels about Barack Obama ? and Mitt Romney.

Bill Clinton aides told WWN that the former President will still introduce Barack Obama at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina next week.

What is Bill Clinton up to?

The iPad might have the bulk of the tablet mind share, but the Nexus 7 has Google.com. The $199 tablet is now advertised on Google?s homepage with an attention-getting animation. It?s hard to miss the tablet on Google.com as it bounces up and eventually rests under a tag line of ?The playground is open. The new $199 tablet from Google.?

And as one of the top pages on the Internet, this ad spot will likely move quite a few tablets.

The Nexus 7 sold like gangbusters from the first day it was available. The 16GB quickly sold out. And that was with very little advertising as the first commercial came weeks later (shown below). But now the Nexus 7 is enjoying a bit of time in Daddy?s front yard.

Now that Google is advertising the N7 on Google.com, their supply must finally be at acceptable levels. The tablet is also slowly launching in new markets; it hit France, Germany and Spain yesterday. It?s probably a safe bet that Google is ramping up for a huge advertising push to fight against the all-but-official Apple iPad mini, said to launch in the coming months.

School Policies Reflect Changing Times | The Record-Courier

As the Baker 5J School Board reviewed suggested policy changes from the Oregon School Boards Association last night, one theme became evident ? times are changing.? From cyberbullying to graduation requirements, the policy updates reflect legal, economic and social changes.

Concerns about harassment, intimidation, and bullying have led to policy changes for a number of years.? The newest modification is the addition of ?Teen Dating Violence,? with its definition, ?A pattern of behavior in which a person uses or threatens to use physical, mental or emotional abuse to control another person who is in a dating relationship with the person, where one or both persons are 13 to 19 ears of age.?? The policy also includes requirements about prevention, reporting, and investigation, as well as a footnote defining sexual orientation.?

A policy on cyberbullying, which had to be added a few years ago has been tweeked to include community, parent, and staff involvement in policy compliance.?? A reference to ?social media? has been added, as well as adjustments to required student and staff training.

Policies regarding abuse of a child (formerly child abuse) and sexual conduct with students have also been updated.

References to charter schools, and regulations regarding them, are sprinkled throughout the policies.

The ?Graduation Requirements? policy reflects both a push for higher standards and an increase in options to fit a range of student situations and needs.? Science requirements are up from two to three credits.? Career and technical education, arts and languages jumped from one credit to three.? In response to the number of ELL (English Language Learner) students, those with limited English proficiency may demonstrate skills ?in a variety of settings, in the language of origin??? There are also provisions for ?modified diplomas,? ?extended diplomas? and ?alternative certificates? for some students.? While these terms were added earlier, some of the stipulations are new.

Educational records, especially those involving special education, are continually evolving.? This time adjustments include references to U.S. and state officials who, under certain circumstance, may have access to records for enforcement and compliance purposes.

Confidentiality continues to be a concern, so the policy on ?personally identifiable information? has undergone some adjustment.? One change is a reference to ?biometric record?, which presumably refers to such things as DNA tests and eye scans.

A school transportation policy included the following change: ?A person over 40 pounds or who has reached the upper weight limit for the forward-facing car seat must use a booster seat until four feet nine inches or age eight and the adult belt properly fits.?

In a policy on wellness, ?Nutrition Education? became ?Nutrition Promotion and Nutrition Education.?? It also includes a reduction in wording (which is unusual) on physical education and activity.? Instead of specifying required numbers of minutes for p.e., the new policy says ?Physical activity should be included in a school?s daily education from grads pre-K through 12.?? The push for required p.e. time in the last version, seems to have been tempered due to financial and logistical constraints.

A rivalry taking root between Tiger, McIlroy

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? The message from Jack Nicklaus still resonates with Tiger Woods.

They were chatting during a practice round at the Presidents Cup nine years ago in South Africa when the topic turned to the various rivals Nicklaus faced over a 25-year stretch of winning majors. Nicklaus told him that day, "Just make sure you're always part of the conversation."

Woods was reminded of that chat Wednesday at The Barclays, when he stood in the back of the room as PGA champion Rory McIlroy finished up his interview.

McIlroy is his latest rival. It's the first time Woods has faced a serious challenger who was younger than him.

"I always wanted to be part of that conversation," Woods said after his pro-am round at Bethpage Black. "That's the neat thing about what Jack had done. He crossed generations, and when you're a part of that conversation for the better part of 25 years, that's saying something. I was kind of hoping when I started off my career I'd be part of that conversation for that length of time."

McIlroy, coming off an eight-shot win at Kiawah Island for his second major, considers it a compliment that he would be mentioned alongside Woods, and he is respectful of everything Woods has accomplished in 17 incomparable years on the PGA Tour.

But the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland can have a little fun.

Woods and McIlroy will be playing together the opening two rounds of The Barclays because the tour groups players based on their FedEx Cup standings during the playoffs. Woods is No. 1 for the fourth time in the six-year history of this series, while McIlroy is No. 3. Zach Johnson will be along for the ride.

McIlroy was asked if he looked forward to playing with Woods, and how much he would love to face him next month in Sunday singles in the Ryder Cup at Medinah.

"It really focuses you from the get-go, a pairing like that," he said. "I feel every time I've played with Tiger, he's sort of brought the best out of me. I really feel focused and obviously want to play well. I'm looking forward to it. I really enjoy his company. I know we'll have a good time out there."

About that point, he noticed Woods had come into the room and was waiting by the back door.

"I'm keeping him waiting here," McIlroy said. "So I'll stop talking about him."

Not so fast.

About that singles match at the Ryder Cup everyone would love to see?

"Yeah, I'd love to go out there," McIlroy said. "I'd love Tiger to go out first and kick his (behind)."

Woods joined in the spontaneous laughter. McIlroy finished up his interview a few minutes later, and as he moved away from the table, he waited by door until Woods walked by and they slapped hands. If a rivalry blossoms, all indications are it will be a friendly one.

There was a tense moment two years ago, when Woods' game was at its lowest level and McIlroy was quoted as saying he would love to face Woods in the Ryder Cup unless his game rapidly improved. Woods was coming off the highest score of his professional career. It was reminiscent of when Stephen Ames poked fun of Woods' accuracy before they faced each other in the first round of the Match Play Championship. Woods won, 9 and 8.

This was different. Woods' initial reaction to the comment was, "At least Rory said, 'Unless my game improves.'" They didn't play each other that week in Wales.

Now, the anticipation is building for the first round Thursday at Bethpage Black, where Woods won the U.S. Open in 2002 and tied for sixth when it last came to Long Island during a rainy week in 2009.

The Black doesn't need to have a U.S. Open to be a tough test. The greens are not as firm. The rough is not as dense, though it still should be avoided.

Woods and McIlroy in the same group has taken focus away from the start of these playoffs. The top 100 in the standings advance to the second round at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then the top 70 move on to the BMW Championship. The top 30 reach the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship, and the winner gets $10 million, the richest payoff in golf.

There are sure to be a few long shots who advance, like Heath Slocum three years ago when he won The Barclays. Some guys might not make it out of the first round.

For now, there are only Tiger and Rory.

"He's a great kid and it's great to be around him," Woods said. "What an amazing talent he really is. I just hope that everyone just lets him grow and develop as a player because it's going to be fun to see over the next 20 years how this kid's career is going to pan out."

From the time he turned pro, Woods had a revolving door of rivals ? Ernie Els, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh. None of them lasted very long. What makes McIlroy more compelling as a rival is that he is a generation younger.

In recent history, those rivalries turn out the best. Nicklaus was 10 years younger than Arnold Palmer when they battled at the U.S. Opens and Masters. Nicklaus was 10 years older than Tom Watson when Watson got him at the Masters and British Open.

By winning the PGA Championship, McIlroy collected his second major at a slightly younger age than Woods. More significantly, however, is that McIlroy twice has won majors by blowing away the field by eight shots. In the last 35 years, only Woods had won a major by that many shots (three times).

McIlroy headed out to get some lunch and go to the practice range, and Woods took his spot behind the table for his interview. He talked about being back at Bethpage, which plays to a par 71 this week, and the busy stretch of four playoff events, capped off by the Ryder Cup.

And he was reminded of what McIlroy said about Medinah, and whether he was ready to take a beating from Boy Wonder in the Ryder Cup.

Police: Pa. woman cited nonexistent twin in theft

BIG BEAVER, Pa. (AP) ? Police say a western Pennsylvania woman blamed her nonexistent twin sister for stealing items from a hotel room.

The Beaver County Times (http://bit.ly/Sm5XDv ) reports Wednesday that police charged 31-year-old Jennifer Brown, of Rochester, with false reports and theft.

State police say Brown took some bed clothes, an alarm clock, coffee pot, basket and a hair dryer ? worth a total of $206 ? from the Holiday Inn in Big Beaver on Aug. 5. Police say they found Brown in another hotel nearby and she claimed her twin sister had taken the items.

When police found no record of a sister, they say Brown claimed her sister had just returned the items, which police found in the other hotel room.

Brown doesn't have an attorney. Police say relatives confirmed she doesn't have a twin.

The Market Ticker ? Just Shoot Me Now (Stiglitz and Zandi ...

From The Market Ticker

There?s dumb, there?s insane, and then there?s Stiglitz and Zandi with this bit of tripe:

With principal writedown no longer an option, the government needs to find a new way to facilitate mass mortgage refinancings. With rates at record lows, refinancing would allow homeowners to significantly reduce their monthly payments, freeing up money to spend on other things. A mass refinancing program would work like a potent tax cut.???????

Refinancing would also significantly reduce the chance of default for underwater homeowners. With fewer losses from past loans burdening their balance sheets, lenders could make more new loans, and communities plagued by mass foreclosures might see relief from blight.

What they?re advocating is a mass-refinancing game ala-HOLC from the Depression.

But there are several problems with this premise.

First, it didn?t work, objectively.? HOLC did nothing to end The Depression.? It arguably made it worse, as it locked people into homes that they should have objectively abandoned and in addition it held the price artificially high, preventing market clearing.?

The Depression did not end until we entered WWII.? That worked, but not for the reason commonly believed (the ?broken window? fallacy.)? Rather, we both destroyed virtually all of the industrial production capacity in the western world (along with two major cities in Japan) and we killed off a huge number of productive workers.? This made America the ?last man standing? from an industrial perspective and we profited mightily from that in the next two decades.

But nobody in their right mind advocates starting a nuclear war in today?s world to do the same thing ? right Joseph?

The other part of the ?magic? of the 1950s and 60s was, of course, the ?boomers.?? That too was a consequence of the war (more specifically, the end of the war) which created a huge boost in family-related things, including houses.? Today such a ?baby boom? is anywhere from unlikely to impossible; we have a much higher population density in America today than we did at the time (139 million .vs. 330 million) and resources were comparatively cheap.? Today we have none of those advantages.

The problem Stiglitz and Zandi have with this proposal is that they?re not bothering with the second-level analysis ? who is going to buy these homes as they turn over, and with what?

Yet that?s the key.? In the 1950s we had young families coming up from the baby boom?s formation that required housing; there was?a strong organic driver of demand, and the converstion of industry from wartime production to peacetime resulted in plenty of jobs and little debt for those who were coming back into the civilian workforce.? The soldier returning home and starting a family did so with little to his name, but he also had little or no debt on his back as well.? Given a good salary he was thus able to support his wife and children ? and did.? At the same time the women who had temporarily manned factories making bombs, guns and aircraft during the war returned to the home and raised children.?

Today our young people fall into two classes ? those who are qualified to pull coffees at Starbucks and those who have college degrees but also come with $ 50,000 or more in college debt.? Neither is capable of taking on a $ 1,000/mo house payment, say much less a $ 2,000 one.

Yet that?s position being put forward.? If we were to ?refinance? those ?underwater? mortgages we do several things that are bad, not good:

  • We prevent the market from clearing.? Underwater homeowners cannot sell and thus cannot move to where jobs are.? We should encourage, not discourage, market clearing prices.?
  • Bankruptcy is a good, not bad, thing.? It is the mechanism by which the losses made when a bad loan is originated are crystallized.??The important thing to remember is that loss happens when a bad loan is made; all acts beyond that point are only an attempt to allocate or defer recognition of that loss, but cannot change the fact that it occurred.
  • Debt loads are too high, and until they come down dramatically there is no market at the current price.? This is the gist of the problem when it comes to housing and everything else.? We have literally poisoned the well with our young people and educational loans; unfortunately this sort of short-sighted policy is all too common among the ivory tower elites, including Stiglitz.? Without a buyer there is no sale!? So who?s the buyer for all these McMansions as the boomers age?? It certainly is not the young guy or gal with a Sociology Degree and $ 50,000 or more in college debt ? a debt that instantly blows their debt-to-income ratios off the charts and precludes purchase of a house!

In short what we have here is yet another attempt to hold asset prices high in the mistaken belief that this will somehow ?help the economy.?? It will?do?no such thing, as it fails to recognize and deal with the fact that the natural buyer is out of the market due to our policies on?educational lending and costs, while at the same time it attempts to bail out?the speculator, the foolish and the banksters who wrote the paper, along with those who were?foolish enough to buy it.

The fact of the matter is that rates should go up, not down.? The market should be encouraged to clear.? The people who are underwater should be encouraged to abandon their property to the market, wherever it may wind up.? Prices will collapse and inventory will clear.? Those who are overburdened will declare bankruptcy and start over.? Those who foolishly lent money will lose their investments.

But?this clearing of the market is the only way out.? At the same time we must stop the inexorable march toward more debt and more?leverage everywhere in our society.? College loans must become rare?rather than common, educational costs must come down, the abuse of?populations and?the environment in foreign lands must become more difficult and less profitable and that which we demand of?government?we must pay for?in the present tense.

Until all of those happen there?is no durable path forward, arm-waving by?hopelessly conflicted?and desperate men such as Stiglitz and Zandi aside.

98% La Grande illusion (Grand Illusion)

All Critics (61) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (1) | DVD (9)

It's among the most understated anti-war films ever made, effortlessly humanistic but far too subtle to indulge in preaching.

A model of simplicity and grace, with emotional effects that move you when you least expect it, the kind of great film that only a master can pull off.

It's still one of the key humanist expressions to be found in movies: sad, funny, exalting, and glorious.

It's an excellent film, with Renoir's usual looping line and deft shifts of tone, though today the balance of critical opinion has shifted in favor of the greater darkness and filigree of The Rules of the Game.

An artistically masterful feature, the picture breathes the intimate life of warriors on both sides during the [First] World War.

Renoir has created a strange and interesting film, but he owes much to his cast.

Like Universal's Oscar winner 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1930), 'La Grande Illusion' was banned in Germany by Nazi propaganda minister Josef Goebbels. See it and sing 'La Marseillaise.'

See it and you may begin to appreciate the sorts of standards for greatness that the cinema is capable of setting.

a monumental humanist work

Its very simplicity of utterance gives it a purity that makes other films that try to express similar sentiments feel forced and obvious.

Funny, heart-wrenching, nail-biting, caustic and profound, touting the futility of armed combat while turning imprisonment and escape into a microcosm for society's aspirations and contradictions.

Renoir's 1937 anti-war masterpiece created a new genre, the POW movie, and with his 1939 La R?gle du jeu constitutes a diptych of unparalleled excellence.

A timeless classic of acting and filmmaking genius that uses the artificiality of war to explore the very construct of society, and is a classic must-see.

The great illusion is that these men of the officer class are somehow different from the masses who suffered the bloodiest of wars. Renoir proves that they are not.

A vividly humanist, anti-war classic.

A sorrowful, acutely thoughtful, and wholly imperishable masterpiece...

Tragic. Moving. Funny. A pure joy.

The film makes its moral point about the futility of combat by emphasising the interconnectedness of all humanity via such shared experiences as hunger, desire and friendship. It's also a ripping yarn with a vein of charming and sometimes risqu? humour.

La Grande Illusion retains its power as an example of European camaraderie and co-operation.

Shark-Tooth Weapons Reveal Lost Biodiversity

Three shark species once found in the central Pacific Ocean are now missing, a study of swords, tridents and other weapons reveals

Weapons from the Gilbert Islands contain the teeth of shark species no longer found in the area. Image: J. Drew/Columbia Univ.

From of Nature magazine

For centuries, the people of the Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific Ocean have crafted weapons from shark teeth. Joshua Drew, a conservation biologist at Columbia University in New York, has used these teeth to show that the waters around the islands ? part of the Republic of Kiribati ? were once home to three species of shark that no longer live in the area.

?This is shadow biodiversity,? said Drew, presenting his results at the 2012 Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, last week. ?Three sharks disappeared from these reefs before we even knew that they existed there.?

Drew analysed 124 shark-tooth weapons housed in the collection of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. The artefacts included swords, tridents and a 4-metre-long lance, dating back over 120 years. All are built in the same way: the islanders drill hole in the teeth and lash them to buttresses of wood with cords made from coconut leaves. All the teeth in one weapon usually come from one species, but Drew found several blades in which the penultimate tooth belonged to a rare species of blue shark (Prionace glauca) ? possibly the signature of a single artisan.

Sharks can be identified from their teeth, so these weapons provide a clear record of the species that once swam around the Gilbert Islands. Drew used field guides and high-resolution photos to identify the teeth. ?If there was any ambiguity,? he says, ?I just dropped down to the ichthyological holdings, pulled out the species I was looking at and literally got the answer from the shark?s mouth.?

Lost species
Drew found that the teeth in the weapons came from 19 species of shark, and that three of these ? the spottail shark (Carcharhinus sorrah), dusky shark (Carcharhinus obscurus) and bignose shark (Carcharhinus altimus) ? are no longer found in waters close to the islands. The spottail and dusky sharks were among the four species most commonly used to make the weapons, but records suggest that they are no longer found within a few thousand kilometres of the Gilbert Islands.

It is unlikely that the teeth of these three missing species were brought in by trade. Sharks feature heavily in the Gilbert Islanders? culture and were already being fished locally when the weapons were made. ?There is no ethnographic, linguistic or archaeological evidence for long-distance trade with people who now live in the areas where the sharks are found,? says Drew.

It is not clear why the species vanished but Drew says it is ?absolutely possible that humans had a role in these declines?. Shark-finning ? the practice of hunting sharks for their fins alone, which kills sharks in much greater bulk than ordinary fishing ? was first recorded in the area in 1910. However, by that time the practice was probably already well established.

Sean Connolly, a marine ecologist at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, says that historical studies such as Drew's are crucial, because there is a lack of good ecological data on shark populations before humans started to change the oceans significantly. ?Such data are essential for the reconstruction of realistic ecological baselines against which we can compare the current status of the world?s marine ecosystems,? he says.

?When we set up modern conservation plans, we shouldn?t sell ourselves short,? says Drew. ?We might not recapture the vivid splendour of those super-rich levels, but this information argues for setting up management plans to protect what sharks are there.?

Crock Pot Chicken ? The Making of a Chef

In case you?re looking for a really quick and easy yet delicious meal, this chicken is the perfect go to. I discovered this while I was on vacation in Minnesota. The weekend especially was busy. Saturday, we had a busy day ahead of us. We did Matt?s for lunch but as soon as we were back in town, we barely had time to stop back home and talk about the day?s plans before heading out to tie-dye. That morning, I?d had the forethought to prep dinner.?

I?d found the inspiration for this meal a while ago. I?d been searching around for chicken recipes and came across it. Seeing as we didn?t have much time before the day out and about on Saturday, it would be perfect. Chicken and equal parts pepsi and barbecue sauce went into the crock pot. It couldn?t have been more simple. When we arrived home before going to tie-dye, I turned the heat down and left it to simmer longer. We didn?t eat until 7 or 8 that night, so the chicken had been cooking about 9 hours. I served it with rice, and it couldn?t have been more delicious. The barbecue sauce and pepsi worked well together and the chicken was flavourful and juicy. Will I be making it again? Naturally, once it becomes colder outside.

This is the perfect busy day dish. All you have to do is set it and forget it. I?m sure as with caramelising onions, you can even prep this dish the night before and let the slow cooker work it?s magic overnight. The longer it cooks, the more fork tender and flavourful it is. Pair it with rice, or maybe pasta. Whichever you prefer.

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup soda*
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  1. Combine chicken, soda, and barbecue sauce in crock pot or slow cooker over medium high heat for 5-7 hours. Serve warm over rice or egg noodles.

Xx Stefanni

Yes, the answer is dividends. Almost always.

More and more evidence is showing that dividends are important, providing the bulk of equity investor returns for many generations. This doesn't mean it's always a good time to buy dividend stocks, but it's something to keep in mind.

By Joshua M. Brown,?Gust blogger / August 11, 2012

Traders work as the New York Stock Exchange nears closing in this July 2012 file photo. Something to remember: while buying dividend stocks is not always the right answer, they're looking more and more favorable in the current market climate.

The evidence that dividends are hugely important just?continues to pile up. By saying this, I don't mean that it is always a good time to buy dividend stocks - right now, for example, the utility sector looks particularly stupid trading at a premium multiple to the market...but I digress.

Ben Inker of GMO took on Bill Gross's?Death of the Cult of Equities?spiel?in a new white paper yesterday.? Essentially, he proves the point that GDP growth rates have little or nothing to do with stock market returns here or elsewhere in the world, effectively negating Gross's premise that some sort of mean reversion must take place.? And while that's all well and good, I think the more interesting portion of Inker's white paper dealt with enormous contribution of dividends for the total return of stocks over the decades.? Check this out:

When we look at stock market returns, dividends have a very large impact on the total, providing the bulk of equity investor returns for most of history. Exhibit 5 shows the compound growth of real returns and real earnings per share against real GDP. Unlike aggregate profits and market capitalization, it is fairly clear that neither returns nor EPS grow in line with GDP.

The gap between the 1.7% real earnings growth (about half the rate of GDP growth) and 5.9% real return (almost double the rate of GDP growth) is made up by dividends, which have averaged about 3.9% since 1929, and a bit of valuation shift (the P/E of the market is a couple of points higher today than it was in December of 1929).?

At my shop, we've been emphasizing fundamentally-weighted indices based on dividends since way before it was fashionable.? And while, in the short-term,?the trade has gotten a bit crowded, we'd love nothing more than the opportunity to buy weakness as fairweather investors run and chase the next shiny object that comes along in the near future.
