Who is Gary Johnson? And How Does He Fit into the 2012 Presidential Race? (ContributorNetwork)

When Gary Johnson announced on Wednesday, December 28, that he was planning to run for president as a libertarian, the Daily Caller reported that his candidacy had the potential to draw the votes of gay Americans from President Barack Obama. Johnson would be the only candidate on the ballot in all 50 states to support the legalization of same-sex marriage. But what about Johnson's stance on other issues? Who is this Johnson guy anyway? Read on for details.

* Johnson, of Taos, New Mexico, was the Governor of New Mexico for two terms, from 1995-2003. According to his website, he cut taxes 14 times and never raised them during his time in office. Before politics, Johnson paid his way through college as a door-to-door handyman. In 2009, he formed the OUR America Initiative, a nonprofit promoting fiscal responsibility, civil liberties and a balanced budget.

* In a December 28 press release, Johnson stated that he was "deeply disappointed" by the Republican nomination process. Johnson, who had been seeking the Republican presidential nomination, was not allowed to participate in most of the debates due to his low polling numbers.

* In addition to gay marriage, Johnson supports a woman's right to choose, the legalization of marijuana and a Fair Tax. He is a proponent of school choice and a public education system without federal regulations and mandates. According to his website, Johnson believes that the legal immigration process should be simplified and that immigration strengthens America's economy.

* Johnson stated in his press release that he is supportive of the Second Amendment and that he opposes gun control. He opposes expensive foreign wars where the national interest is not clear. "I am confident this agenda will resonate with the American people because it actually reflects the true beliefs of a clear majority of Americans," Johnson wrote.

* According to the National Journal, Johnson will likely do well in New Mexico as a libertarian candidate, based on his successful time in office there. In fact, a Public Policy Polling Center survey showed that he could gain up to 30 percent of the Republican vote, 16 percent of the Democratic, and the majority of Independent votes in a three-way race with Obama and either Gingrich or Romney, the National Journal reported.

* The Christian Science Monitor reported that Governor Johnson may have competition for the libertarian Party nomination if Rep. Ron Paul doesn't receive the Republican nomination and decides to return to the libertarian ticket, where Paul ran for president in 1988.
