Family of agent slain in botched sting seeks damages (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The family of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry has filed a $25 million wrongful-death claim against the U.S. government, saying he was killed because federal investigators allowed guns to fall into the hands of violent criminals.

Terry was shot dead in southern Arizona in December 2010 by suspected border bandits.

Two guns found at the scene were traced to a botched U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) sting operation that allowed weapons to slip across the border to Mexico. It was not clear, however, if those weapons fired the fatal shots.

The claim filed on behalf of Terry's parents, Kent Terry and Josephine Terry, alleges the ATF acted in violation of its own policies and negligently allowed the weapons to be bought by violent criminals.

"If not for a negligently conceived and executed ATF plan to direct dangerous firearms into the hands of violent criminals, Brian's murderers would have never had the weapons they used against him," said the claim, which names the ATF as being responsible.

"Because of ATF's negligence, a grieving family has lost forever their son and brother," it said.

Filing a claim is a required legal step before lodging a lawsuit. Reuters asked Lincoln Combs - one of attorneys with Phoenix law firm Gallagher & Kennedy representing the Terry family - if they would file a lawsuit, but he did not immediately respond.

The sting operation dubbed "Fast and Furious" ran from late 2009 to early 2011 out of the Phoenix offices of the ATF and the U.S. Attorney. The goal was to try to track guns being smuggled from the initial purchaser to senior drug cartel members.

However, in most cases ATF agents did not follow the guns beyond the initial buyer.

The case is subject to an ongoing inquiry in the U.S. Congress. Republicans have questioned who in President Barack Obama's administration knew about and approved the operation and its tactics and when. They have issued subpoenas for documents and for witnesses to testify.

Mexican authorities have complained about the flood of weapons coming into their country from the United States and contributing to the deadly war with the drug cartels.

Rutgers to Hold Panel on Legal Careers | New Jersey Traffic Lawyer ...

Because many people end up in law school for reasons other than a desire to practice law, educating oneself before attending law school is an extremely worthwhile endeavor. What is law school like? And more importantly, what kind of career can you have if you go to law school?

In order to introduce potential law school applicants to the various career paths open to them after law school, the Office of the Vice President for Undergraduate Education at Rutgers is going to present its annual event on law careers a week and a half from now, on the 13th of February.

The Careers in the Law event will take place at 8 pm on Monday, February 13th, at the Eagleton Institute of Politics, 191 Ryders Lane in New Brunswick.

The program is free and open to the public. You do not need to be a Rutgers student to attend. A panel of various legal minds will be present to discuss and compare different aspects of different types of legal practice. There will be lawyers knowledgeable on life in small civil litigation, the sports industry, criminal defense work, and patent law.

Although these subjects are certainly not all encompassing enough to give a potential applicant a complete view of the practice of law and various options available, but the subjects are interesting and will give some interesting points for anyone considering law school to think about.

This information is not intended as legal advice.

Full-page ads attack Google's privacy policy; el Goog responds

Google Privacy

Google, having already explained to the boys and girls inside the Beltway that they don't need to go all Chicken Little over its upcoming new consolidated privacy policy, today took aim at Redmond, Wash., for (if you can believe it) acting even more childish. More specifically, Google responded to claims from Microsoft (among others) that it's evil, it's only out to sell your information and that if you're not careful, Google will lossen your teeth while you sleep. (We might be confused over that last point.)

For those of you who don't ready words printed on dried pulp, the full-page ads Microsoft has taken out are "Putting people first" and go on to say the following about Google:

Google is in the process of making some unpopular changes to some of their most popular products. Those changes, cloaked in language like "transparency," "simplicity" and "consistency," are really about one thing: making it easier for Google to connect the dots between anything you search, sen, say or stream while using one of their services.

But, the way they're doing it is making it harder for you to maintain control of your personal information. Why are they so interested in doing this that they would risk this kind of backlash? One logical reason: Every data point they collect and connect to you increases how valuable you are to an advertiser.

To be clear, there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to improve the quality of an advertising product. But, that effort needs to be balanced with continuing to meet the needs and interests of users. Every business finds its own balance and attracts users who share those prioritites. Google's new changes have upset that balance, with users' priorities being de-prioritized. That's why people are concerned and looking for alternatives.

If these changes rub you the wrong way, please consider using our portfoilo of award-winning products and services.

This is straight up political theater, folks. Never mind that if Microsoft was in the search/advertising business, it'd be doing (if it was smart) exactlly the same thing. But it's not. It's in the software licensing (and/or litigating, depending on who you ask) business. And Google continues to repeat that it's not collecting any new data with this new privacy policy, nor is it selling your data.

We're really not going to tell you what to think here. Read Google's responses from today. Go back and read its responses to Congress. And then read Google's new privacy policy, which is only a month away from taking effect. Then decide just how worried you are.
