Italy beats Germany 2-1 to reach Euro 2012 final

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Mario Balotelli flexed his muscles in more ways than one.

The 21-year-old striker quieted his of critics by leading Italy to an unexpected spot in the European Championship final, scoring twice in the first half in a 2-1 victory over Germany on Thursday night.

After his second goal, Balotelli stripped off his jersey and flexed his muscles in a defiant pose ? even if that meant an automatic yellow card.

"This is the greatest night of my life, but I hope Sunday is going to be even better," Balotelli said, looking ahead to the final against defending champion Spain. "In the opening matches I had a lot of chances, and I wasn't able to finish them. But In football you also need luck."

In the 20th minute, Balotelli had no trouble getting past Holger Badstuber to head in a pinpoint cross from Antonio Cassano. Then in the 36th, Balotelli received the ball behind the defense and blasted a long shot into the top right corner.

With three goals, Balotelli is tied for the tournament lead. After the match, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was asked if this was the best match of Balotelli's career.

"Balotelli's career has just started," Prandelli said.

Germany's winless streak against Italy in major tournaments reached eight matches. The Germans failed to trouble Italy for much of the match, although Mesut Oezil scored a consolation penalty in injury time after Federico Balzaretti was whistled for a handball.

Germany entered the game on a world-record 15-match winning streak in competitive matches.

"It's a very bitter defeat," Germany captain Philipp Lahm said. "We tried everything in the second half but our goal came too late. We have so much potential in our team but if we cannot give the right performance at the right time or are not clever enough, then we lose such a game."

The final in Kiev, Ukraine, will be a rematch of Italy and Spain's 1-1 draw that opened Group C.

"We showed we're on Spain's level and that's where we started this run," Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio said. "It's no longer a question of fear. Now we've got to pull out everything we still have inside ourselves."

While Italy has won four World Cups, it's only European Championship title came in 1968. As they did in winning the 1982 and 2006 World Cups, the Azzurri have managed to maintain their focus despite a match-fixing and betting scandal at home.

"All I can say is that when you talk about Italy, everyone needs to be careful," Prandelli said. "We played an extraordinary match. We displayed a model of fair play and attachment to this shirt."

On a pleasant evening at the National Stadium Warsaw, Cassano set up the opening goal by befuddling Germany defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng to lift the ball in Balotelli's direction.

The second goal began with a long vertical pass from Riccardo Montolivo, whose mother is German. Balotelli collected the pass with his back to the goal, controlled the ball with his chest and then sprinted forward and unleashed a blazing shot from the edge of the area as Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer again stood immobile.

"We did what we had thought would put them in trouble," Prandelli said. "We played centrally and looked for one-on-one opportunities with Cassano."

Even before scoring, Italy controlled the pace of the match, although Germany did have several chances from Hummels, Toni Kroos and Oezil.

In the 35th, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon preserved the lead by swatting away a long shot from Sami Khedira ? and Balotelli doubled the lead a minute later.

To start the second half, Germany coach Joachim Loew brought on Miroslav Klose for Mario Gomez at center forward and replaced Lukas Podolski with Marco Reus on the wing.

With Germany appearing slightly more organized, Lahm had a great look at the goal in the 49th but shot way over the bar.

"If we had scored earlier, there could have been more for us," Loew said. "The disappointment is great. Nobody is speaking in the dressing room. The players are crying. ... But I am not going to question everything we've done. This team has great quality. It will continue to develop and learn."

Buffon made another impressive save in the 62nd, leaping to push a free kick from Reus off the bar.

While Italy largely sat back and protected its lead in the second half, the Azzurri did produce some dangerous counterattacks. Marchisio shot just wide in the 67th and 75th and substitute Antonio Di Natale missed another chance in the 82nd.

Di Natale came on in the 70th after Balotelli went down with a cramp to his left leg.

White-clad German fans greatly outnumbered Italian supporters, unveiling a huge banner before kickoff that featured a giant "G'' for Germany. However, most of the stadium was filled with Polish fans cheering for Italy.

"We're living a dream along with millions of Italians," Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini said. "We're going to enjoy this victory a little longer, then we'll think about Sunday, because we want to continue dreaming."

BBC Says 'I'm Sorry' for Lack of Coverage of ... - Yeshiva World News

The massacre of the Fogel family HY?D in Yishuv Itamar took place in March 2011? but it took the BBC a bit of time to come to the realization that its lack of coverage of this horrific massacre, an Arab terror attack, required an explanation. While the BBC covered the event on its website, it was omitted from broadcast news.

Conservative MP Louise Mensch complained, demanding an explanation, and he received an apology. Amazingly, when he asked the BBC?s outgoing director, Mark Thompson to explain the decision, the latter brazenly told him that it was a ?very busy? time period and therefore, the massacre was not covered. He explained they were reporting on events in Libya and the tsunami in Japan.

Thompson insists the decision was not one of bias, simply poor judgment at the time. He went as far as to say they cover events in Gaza as well as showing the effects of rocket attacks in Sderot. Thompson added in his defense that he did not air a humanitarian appeal during Operation Cast Lead that was aimed at showing the pain and suffering in Gaza.

MP Mensch accepted the apology and was comfortable with the reasoning that accompanied it, persuaded the decision was not a biased one as Thompson stated.

Settlement Council spokesman Roni Arazi was less comforted by Thompson?s explanation, citing the media coverage of events in Gaza are definitely biased against Israel, simply confirming the lack of media objectivity that exists today.

Under scrutiny, Vatican bank opens its doors

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican bank, one of the most secretive institutions in the secrecy-obsessed Vatican, opened itself up to a little external scrutiny Thursday in a bid to show it's serious about fighting money-laundering and being more financially transparent.

During a nearly three-hour power-point presentation to a few dozen journalists, the bank's director, Paolo Cipriani, highlighted the peculiar nature of the Institute for Religious Works, the institute's official name, and stressed its internal and external financial controls.

But more importantly, he sought to refute media allegations that the institution has been less than cooperative with requests for financial information from banks such as JPMorgan and Italian authorities.

At one point, Cipriani displayed a letter from Italy's financial police thanking him for his "timely and exhaustive response" in signaling a suspect transaction to them even before the Vatican's new anti-money laundering law went into effect last year. And he described in detail the exhaustive checks carried out by the institute to ensure that the money that comes into and out of its accounts is clean.

The institute, known by its Italian acronym IOR, has long been the subject of rumor and scandal ? earned in part because of its role two decades ago in one of the most spectacular banking collapses in Italy, and ongoing suspicions by Italian investigators that it hasn't abided by anti-money laundering norms.

Cipriani, in fact, remains under investigation by Rome prosecutors for a 2010 suspect transaction. He hasn't been charged and said the transaction merely involved moving money from one IOR treasury account to another ? not a client transfer which requires more information be provided.

In his first ever news conference, Cipriani said that his aim in coming before reporters was to "remove the veil and shadow of the past and do the utmost to respect the needs of the Holy See."

However, TV cameras and recording devices were barred, and Cipriani didn't take spontaneous questions from reporters. Instead the Vatican spokesman selected some that had been previously submitted and posed them to Cipriani, an affable, fast-talking Italian who nevertheless seemed a bit overwhelmed by the whole encounter.

The visit comes on the eve of a crucial decision by a Council of Europe committee on whether the Vatican has complied with a host of anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing norms.

A good compliance grade will enhance the Vatican's chances of eventually getting on the so-called "white list" of countries that share financial information ? a keen aim of both the pope and Cipriani, since the bank has to deal with financial institutions that insist that its books are clean.

The Institute was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a squat stone tower just inside the Vatican City gates, it is not open to the public and isn't even a bank per se but rather an institution that provides financial services, such as bank transfers and financial advice, for church entities in 150 countries.

It has about 35,000 accounts belonging to religious congregations, dioceses, Holy See offices, diplomats and Vatican officials. Cipriani said it has about ?6 billion ($7.5 billion) in assets and makes conservative, ethically-minded investments, about five percent of which are in the stock market and the bulk in bonds.

It doesn't do any business with offshore banks, applies regular customer due diligence and internationally-approved bank transfer measures and has a fully functioning anti-money laundering system of checks, he said.

The IOR has been in the news lately because of the unprecedented ouster of its president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, who was brought in specifically to help usher in a new era of transparency. The IOR's lay board of financiers removed Gotti Tedeschi last month, saying he was actually becoming an obstacle to transparency.

On Wednesday, the board met for the first time since the ouster and began deliberations on the selection of a new president.

Cipriani didn't mention Gotti Tedeschi's name or refer to the ouster. He did, however, respond to some other issues that have arisen in recent months, including the abrupt decision by JPMorgan to close its IOR account earlier this year.

Because the IOR isn't a traditional bank per se, it relies on commercial banks in Italy and elsewhere to carry out its transactions. Its 35-year relationship with JPMorgan came to an end when the U.S. bank asked for information about transactions beyond the scope of what the IOR was contractually required to provide.

Cipriani said the type of information JPMorgan was seeking involved "types of questions made by vigilance authorities" ? a reference to the Vatican's belief that Italian banking regulators were forcing JPMorgan to seek such information, even though it went beyond what is required.

The questions didn't concern an individual suspect transaction, but rather general questions about the IOR's policies about joint accounts, accounts with delegates and other matters, Cipriani said.

Cipriani displayed a letter in which he told JP Morgan to go through the Vatican's financial intelligence unit to get the information it wanted. Instead, JP Morgan "unilaterally" closed the account, he added.

JP Morgan has said it cannot comment. The Bank of Italy has refused repeated requests for comment about its decision to designate the IOR an offshore entity, a move that required banks in Italy to apply more scrupulous controls over their IOR transactions.

The IOR was implicated in a scandal over the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano in the 1980s in one of Italy's largest fraud cases. Roberto Calvi, the head of Banco Ambrosiano, was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in circumstances that remain mysterious.

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans the bank had made to several dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

While denying any wrongdoing, the Vatican bank agreed to pay $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.

FDA approves Beckman Coulter's ?Prostate Health Index? test ? THE ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

According to a media release from Beckman Coulter and a report on the MedPage Today web site, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved marketing of the ?Prostate Health Index? test as a new way to test for risk of prostate cancer.

The Prostate Health Index or phi test combines information from levels of total PSA, free PSA, and a PSA precursor protein known as [-2]pro-PSA. The company claims that this test is ?2.5 times more specific in detecting prostate cancer than PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in patients with PSA values in the 4-10 ng/mL range and is proven to reduce the number of prostate biopsies.? However, the utility of this test in clinical practice is still to be clearly demonstrated.

Like the PCA3 test, the phi test will presumably be a test used exclusively by urologists and a few other specialists in an attempt to better identify those men who are at risk for prostate cancer after an initial PSA test. If the use of this test can really reduce the number of prostate biopsies by something like 30 percent (as claimed by Beckman Coulter), then certainly it does have a very real value for this reason alone. What is not at all clear at present is whether this test can offer any meaningful assistance in helping to differentiate between clinically significant prostate cancer that needs treatment and prostate cancer that can simply be monitored under active surveillance.

UN report on Haiti rape shows few prosecutions

(AP) ? The prosecution of rape cases in Haiti remains bogged down, and justice is rarely served, the United Nations mission in the impoverished country said in a report released Tuesday.

The study by the U.N.'s human rights section in Haiti, carried out with the cooperation of police and judicial officials, examined a sample of 62 rape complaints filed over a three-month period in 2010 at five of the busiest police stations in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. The U.N. report noted the sample was small compared with about 500 rapes recorded in the capital for all of 2010 by local women's organizations.

None of the 62 rape complaints went to trial more than a year after they were filed with police, the U.N. report said.

The government prosecutor's office in Port-au-Prince reviewed only 25 of the 62 cases, and ordered the judicial authorities to investigate 11 of them.

Four of the 11 cases were dismissed, while the rest remain under investigation. As of December 2011, only one the 62 cases in the sample period had been referred for trial, but the trial had not begun.

The U.N. report found other concerns.

Prosecution proved difficult in part because there was no accurate information on rape cases in Port-au-Prince. There is no national database that documents cases of sexual violence, which means that data from the government, aid groups and U.N. sources are not comprehensive.

The report's authors said many records were destroyed in a devastating 2010 earthquake, which toppled thousands of buildings, including government offices and police stations. Advocacy groups have expressed alarm over what they say has been an unusually high number of rapes in the spontaneous settlements that sprang up in the capital and other cities in the quake's aftermath.

The U.N. report's authors said police and judicial authorities lack even the most basic resources to do their jobs, such as computers, vehicles and furniture.

They also noted that police officers don't always tell rape victims that they should try to obtain a medical examination within 72 hours after an attack.

But the U.N. report recommends that government officials ensure that police and judicial authorities understand that a medical certificate is not required to file a rape case. In Haiti, it is often difficult for rape victims to obtain medical records because they cannot pay for transportation or may fear retaliation.

The report also recommends that the government set aside more money to agencies helping women such as the Ministry of Women's Rights. Only 1.4 percent of the national budget was allocated to the ministry in the proposed budget for 2011-2012.

A spokesman for the Haitian National Police couldn't be immediately reached, and the government's press office didn't immediately response to a request for comment.

Egyptians find out their next president on Sunday

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians find out on Sunday whether their next president will be a former military officer or an Islamist from the army's old adversary, the Muslim Brotherhood, after a long week's wait since a vote to pick a successor to the deposed Hosni Mubarak.

Impatient Brotherhood supporters have been out on Cairo's Tahrir Square day and night since a call in midweek from their leaders to demand the current ruling generals cancel measures they say are designed to hem in the powers of the man they believe was elected last weekend, Islamist Mohamed Morsy.

Hundreds were there again on Saturday, chanting "Victory for Morsy!" and "Morsy, Morsy, Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), before officials finally set a time for announcing the result.

The election committee will do so at news conference at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Sunday, committee official Hatem Bagato said on Saturday, after run-off voting was held on June 16-17.

The party atmosphere in the square anticipated what could be one of the most dramatic turns of events in the Middle East in decades - the emergence of an Islamist president of the most populous Arab nation.

A delay in announcing the result, initially scheduled for Thursday, was explained by officials as required to deal with appeals over local voting irregularities. But it has prompted Brotherhood concern that the military-led "deep state", left over when Mubarak was toppled last year, was trying to steal their victory, just as it routinely rigged votes in the past.

"We want the military council to announce the real results without forgery," said Hassan Eissa, 43, an accountant from north of Cairo who was demonstrating on the square. He accused the army of reneging on promises to hand over when it dissolved the Islamist-led parliament on the eve of the presidential run-off and then took for itself legislative powers by decree.

"They have no right," Eissa said. "Egyptians shouldn't be under any kind of guardianship after the revolution."

A Morsy win would create a dramatic new configuration for Egypt's politics. Supporters of religious rule will be delighted but others, including many who fought on Tahrir Square to end dictatorship, will be anxious at what it means for minorities, women, secular values and Egypt's dealings with the West.

Reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei said he had been in contact with the military and Morsy's camp to avoid a showdown, but said he was worried that if Shafik were declared winner "we are in for a lot of instability and violence ... a major uprising." His comments were carried by the CNN website.

Violence by hardline Islamists in Tunisia, whose revolt inspired that in Egypt, has troubled many Egyptian liberals.

On Saturday, a group of liberal and leftist groups announced the formation of an alternative "civil front", seeking support from those wanting neither military nor religious rule.

"Those who are attacking the military council, have allied with it when their interests were in line," said Ahmed Said, head of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, noting links between the Muslim Brotherhood and ruling generals in the past year.

TALKS

Senior figures from both the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the Brotherhood told Reuters they had been in discreet talks this week on political arrangements, though the army has made clear it will not go back on what critics called a "soft coup" aimed at delaying a handover to full civilian rule.

It will neither cancel the dissolution of the Islamist-led parliament nor a decree by which it reserved legislative powers for the council, curbing the president's power.

Presented with a take-it-or-leave-it choice, the Brotherhood may find a compromise to pull their protesters off the streets. Years of conflict have made it a wary organisation, and it has cooperated with the council in the 16 months since Mubarak fell.

Electoral and military officials told Reuters during the week and as late as Friday that the Brotherhood candidate had a narrow but clear lead over former general Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister. But nothing is certain.

One newspaper, Shorouk, headlined: "Morsy to be announced president today ... Unless."

Morsy, like Shafik, has promised to build a government that brings in people from across the political spectrum. Many of those who launched the Arab Spring uprising were dismayed when more centrist candidates, neither from the army nor the Brotherhood, were eliminated in the first round vote last month.

While some grudgingly backed Shafik to block religious rule, others half-heartedly supported Morsy to prevent what they saw as a return to the old regime. Among those protesting on Tahrir Square on Saturday, Cairo lawyer Atef Rehan said: "I'm not from the Brotherhood and I voted for Morsy only reluctantly.

"But I am here to support their demands."

A 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer, the bearded and bespectacled Morsy is not a familiar figure to Egyptians, some of whom ridicule him as the movement's "spare tyre" after his campaign was launched following the exclusion from the race on a technicality of a much better known leader, Khairat al-Shater.

Both sides recall the bloodshed that ravaged another North African state, Algeria, when military rulers thwarted an Islamist movement's triumph at the ballot box in the 1990s, and appear willing to renew the tentative cooperation they built up after Mubarak's overthrow and step back from an outright clash.

An Islamist insurrection in Egypt in the 1990s also cost hundreds of lives. That uprising was not supported by the Brotherhood, which renounced violence decades ago as a means to achieve political change in Egypt.

WEIGHING OPPOSITION

Delay in the final tally of votes was due to many appeals being heard by the electoral commission, officials said. But it also gave more time for talks to defuse tensions.

Discussions between generals and Islamists, whose violent confrontation has marked Egypt for decades, were assuming Morsy would win narrowly.

"We have met with them to discuss how to get out of this crisis after parliament was dissolved and the new president's powers curbed," Shater, who runs the Brotherhood's finances and strategic planning, told Reuters - although he added they were some way from reaching any kind of agreement.

Major General Mamdouh Shaheen, a member of SCAF, confirmed the recent meetings and repeated the army's commitment to a democratic transition. But he echoed a strong statement issued by SCAF on Friday that rejected the Brotherhood's demands.

"The constitutional decree is the exclusive authority of the military council," Shaheen told Reuters.

In a brusque statement read on state television as Egyptians were completing their Friday prayers, SCAF criticised the Brotherhood's premature announcement of the election result and said protesters must not disrupt daily life.

Morsy shot back that the generals were defying the will of the people and said protests would go on. But he praised the army as "patriotic" and urged a rapid election result.

In a country where virtually no one can remember an election before last year that was not rigged, trust is low, not least among Brotherhood officials, many of whom, like Morsy, were jailed under Mubarak for their political activities.

The same electoral commission that handed 90 percent of a November 2010 parliamentary vote to Mubarak's supporters - a result that fuelled the protests that brought him down a few weeks later - sits in judgment on the new presidency.

Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are

This week sees many corners of the globe celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. A man whose contribution to the worlds of tech and gadgets is immeasurable -- a sentiment not lost on Google. Today, geeks and norms worldwide will be waking up to possibly the most complex doodle to date. Can you set the machine and spell out "Google"? If you can, you'll be sent off to lots more information about the man himself. This isn't the only thing Mountain View's done to keep his legacy alive, having previously helped Bletchley Park raise funds to purchase (and display) Turing's papers, and more recently helping curators at London's Science Museum with its Codebreaker - Alan Turing's Life and Legacy exhibition. If you haven't already, head to Google.com and pop your logic hat on, and if you get stuck, head past the break for a helpful video.

Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08)

The Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08) ($109. 99 direct) has a lot in common with the Pandigital Portable Wand Scanner with Feeder Dock (PanScn09) ($119. 99 direct, 2. 5 stars) that I recently reviewed. It has also some important differences. The most obvious is that it doesn't include a dock, which adds size and weight along with a paper feed capability. If what you need is strictly a wand scanner, with an emphasis on portability, however, the PanScn08 is the more appropriate choice. (And note that it's available in several essentially identical versions, some of which add a pair of letters to the name, after the 08.)

At 1.4 by 10.4 by 1. 5 inches (HWD) and 0. 5 pounds, the PanScn08 isn't as small as the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369. 99 direct 3. 5 stars) wand scanner, and it doesn't look as much like an actual wand. However, it works the same way, letting you scan by starting at the top of the page, and scanning down in a single sweep. Rollers on the bottom of the scanner make it easy to sweep down the page smoothly and evenly.

Another feature the PanScn08 shares with the DocuPen Xtreme X05, as well as with the PanScn09, is that it scans to memory rather than to a computer. Pandigital includes a 2GB microSD card to save the scanned files to. When you're ready to move them to a computer, you can use the supplied microSD adaptor to plug the card into your computer, or you can connect using the supplied USB cable, let the computer recognize the card in the scanner as USB memory, and copy the files.

Setup and Scanning
Wand scanners don't generally need a lot of setup. With the PanScn08 you only have to insert the microSD card and rechargeable battery, and let it charge for two hours. While you're waiting, you can optionally install NewSoft Presto! PageManager, a document management program, and the only application Pandigital includes with the scanner. The program is limited in many ways, but it includes an OCR module that will let you convert scanned documents to editable text or searchable PDF files.

Not so incidentally, the rechargeable battery is one of the other differences (besides the dock) between the PanScn08 and PanScn09, and it's the one difference in the PanScn08's favor. The only other important difference is that the PanScn09 includes a color display that lets you see a thumbnail of the scans, so you can rescan if there's something obviously wrong with the image. With the PanScn08, you have to wait until you get back to your computer and transfer the files, at which point you may not have the originals to rescan.

Scanning with the PanScn08 is easy. The scanner offers one button to toggle between color mode and grayscale, one for 300 ppi versus 600 ppi, and one for JPG versus PDF format. Simply choose your settings and scan. As with other wand scanners, I didn't have any trouble getting good scans from the beginning?at least, not at 300 ppi. It took a few tries at 600 ppi to learn to slow down to the right speed.

Scan Results
Given the one program the scanner comes with, the only two applications I could test it for were optical character recognition (OCR) and document management. It didn't score well on either, but only because of limitations in the software.

For OCR, the combination of the scanner and PageManager did reasonably well at recognizing text. However, the formatting was so far off the mark that I couldn't even determine what font sizes it managed to read without a mistake. Similarly, the document management score suffered from PageManager's limitations for converting files to searchable PDF format.

Pandigital doesn't include any photo editing software, but I scanned some photos to get a sense of the photo scan capability. Most of the scans qualified as roughly snapshot quality, which makes the scanner good enough for casual photo scanning, but not suitable for anything more demanding.

The Pandigital Handheld Wand Scanner (PanScn08) is potentially attractive for portable scanning, but is also severely limited by the software Pandigital includes. If it came with a more capable set of programs, as with the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199. 99 direct, 4 stars), for example, it would be a much stronger contender. As it is, it earns a recommendation as being worth considering, but only if you already own the software you need or are willing to buy it elsewhere.

How patrons? book-borrowing habits are changing

The findings reported in this chapter come entirely from the online canvassings of patrons and librarians. The patron respondents in our opt-in sample were frequent visitors of both their library?s physical branch and website. They use their library?s website regularly to reserve books and download e-books, while physical branches were for print check-outs and the occasional research query. One patron?s description of her library habits was representative of many in our online panel: ?I go to the library branch much less often and I use the library website several times per week. Before I got my e-book reader, I visited my library at least weekly and almost never used the website, except to reserve books.?

Many librarians echoed this. ?Our customers are still using the library but in different ways. They browse our catalog online, place reserves on the items they want, then pick them up at their location of choice. Many fewer browse the collection in person,? one library department head told us. Another librarian observed, ?We have so many people who only call us to update their library card so they can borrow e-books online.? A patron respondent had a similar story: ?Fifteen years ago, I regularly visited the library twice a week. Now I go about once a month and often that is just to drop off books that are due or pick up books that I have reserved. I would prefer to do ALL of my library business online and have many more materials available in e-book format.?

Many patrons who were already using their library?s website to reserve books and then picking the books up; e-books allow them to do the same thing entirely online:

  • ?Before I got my NOOK I would borrow 3-4 books a week from the library. I would always reserve it on the website and have it ready for me when I got there. Now I don?t go near as often. Maybe once every couple of months for myself, but I take my kids there often.?
  • ?In the past, I had to stop in the library to pick up print books I had reserved. Now that I can also download e-books, I go to the building less often, but my total check outs are increased.?
  • Patrons with limited access to their library?s physical branch, including adults living with disability and those who live in very rural areas, mentioned how e-books helped them read more. ?A few months ago I was housebound due to a nasty illness,? one told us, and ?thanks to the digital download system I was able to check out books and was able to keep on reading. That was an immense help since I live by myself and there was no one who could go get books for me.?

Librarians likewise said that the rising interest in e-books was one of the most striking changes to patrons? habits. One library director described the sharp increase in demand for e-books in the last few years: ?I graduated from library school in 2008 and the was little or no demand for e-books, mainly because the Kindle wasn?t compatible with the e-book lending services until very recently and the NOOK didn?t come out until 2010. Once the NOOK came out and the Kindle had become popular the demand for e-books increased significantly.? Another respondent told us, ?People are asking for digital content. Anything digital. They are hungry for it.?

Some patrons said that all that has changed is that they use the website for e-books more, but still visit the library?s physical location as much as they did before. Others said that their physical visits have increased: ?I go to the library more because in searching for e-books, I?ll often find a book I want to read that is not available electronically, so I reserve it in print, and go to the library to pick it up. While I?m there, my children browse, and we take home more books.?

Yet even as some adults shifted to e-books, they wrote that they still returned to the library for print books for children and young adults. ?The biggest change is that I download e-books more frequently,? one parent wrote. ?However, with five kids, we are at the library a lot. It is our home away from home. We love our local library and truly can?t imagine life without it.?

Many librarians said that patrons were now interested in a wider variety types of digital and multi-media holdings?encompassing not only e-books and audiobooks, but also video games and DVDs. Yet many library staff members said that digital media are not necessarily replacing traditional materials. ?Patrons increasingly request e-book content, but this seems to be in addition to their already-established library habits, and has not replaced any existing hardcopy media,? one library staff member told us. Similarly, patrons often wrote that e-book borrowing often complemented their established reading habits. ?I don?t feel that my e-book reader has changed any of my patterns involving the local library. I still visit it frequently, and I still check out books in print. However, I feel that I do read more often with my e-book reader because there are just that many more things available to read (and I can acquire them almost instantly),? one e-book borrower said.

As one librarian pointed out, the prevalence of online systems for checking out e-books, reserving print books, and paying fines means while that patrons may have less ?routine? interaction with library staff, they require more ?specialized help? in the form of tech support. Many others echoed this. ?It seems that most people who actually contact a librarian are looking for help navigating the site and downloading e-books,? one librarian told us. Another wrote, ?We spend a significant part of our day explaining how to get library books onto e-book readers.?

The issue is even more pronounced with patrons who have not had much experience with technology in the past. One librarian detailed how the increased popularity of e-book reading devices has resulted in library staff spending more time on the basic tech support: ?Many of our older patrons received electronic devices as gifts over the past two years. This group of library users asks for lots of help with their devices, from plugging them in to turning them on to trying to make them interface with the e-book portion of the library website.?? (For more about this topic, please see Part 8: Future Thoughts.)

It should be noted that even among our panel of librarians whose libraries lend out e-books, not all face a huge demand for their electronic titles. ?My library serves an economically challenged area so we have not had the demand for e-books that other libraries are experiencing,? one director wrote. ?Large numbers of our patrons have not been able to invest in e-book readers or tablets.? However, she added that the library had also seen ?an increase in people using their mobile phones to access library services.?

Librarians: Changes in library holdings

As noted in the first section of this report, the scope and popularity of most libraries? digital holdings have increased and increasing levels of usage are driving the change. Our online panels reflected this trend, with most of the library staff who responded to our online questionnaire reporting that e-book circulation at their library had more than doubled in the past year (compared with the previous year).

In our online questionnaire, library staff described how they are attempting to fund e-book collections in response to rising patron demand. One common strategy mentioned by these librarians was to shift some funds allocated from printed collections to digital collections. Others mentioned cutting increasingly obsolete resources, like collections of cassettes or VHS tapes, as well as databases that are rarely used:

  • ?We have increased our budget for digital content by 500% in the past three years. We have cut the budget for CD audiobooks and print materials to free up funds for downloadable content.?
  • ?We have no budget for digital content. We will need to cut somewhere in the future to free up funds for e-book purchases.?
  • ??We initially started with grant money to fund e-books and downloadable audio. Last year the amount was increased using funding from the co-op. This year each library has had to add additional funds (ours was from the materials budget) to try and keep up with the demand, but with the increase in prices we have not been able to keep the same hold to book ratio as we do with print materials.?
  • ?There has been a decrease in the collection budget for reference materials and serials to meet the need for digital content.?

Among the library staff who responded to our questionnaire, about half said that their library pays for patron access to e-books out of a collection budget. The next most common response was that the library participates in a consortium that pays and provides access to all consortium members, as public libraries in Wisconsin have recently done. In this collective agreement, Wisconsin libraries will ?pool their resources and create a $1 million fund to lease new e-content in 2012.?

According to Library Journal?s 2012 Book Buying Survey, print books account for on average 61% of libraries? spending on materials, compared with 20% for media and 4% for e-books. The survey found that libraries? book budgets declined 2% over the past year, even as most libraries increased their spending on e-books. And, according to the ALA?s 2011-2012 Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study, 57% of libraries report flat or decreased operating budgets in FY2012.

The changing roles of librarians

Over half of the librarians among our online respondents said that the evolution of e-book reading devices and digital content has had a good impact on their role as a librarian:

  • ?I think it?s had a good impact. I think patrons are excited when we help them navigate the world of e-books and they actually get an e-book onto their reader for the first time. Not only are they able to read the book at no cost, but it gives them a sense of technological accomplishment. Using e-books motivates them to power through all of the roadblocks?they might have given up otherwise, but the incentive here is great enough that they keep going.?
  • ?Since e-versions of books and information do not require physical space, handling, can?t be lost or easily destroyed; can be controlled in terms of check-out, [they] eliminate a whole range of customer service problems that present themselves in a physical environment?no late fees for an e-book because the check out period can be completely controlled. For those reasons, it is extremely efficient and effective way to provide service. It preserves information in a new way and allows access in a manner most convenient to the end user?all good. Only access to the technology poses a problem.?

Others were more ambivalent:

  • ?Patrons are rediscovering the librarian as a helper and knowledge-bank. This is good. But we, as librarians, are more tech gurus than librarians to patrons with e-book readers and other mobile devices. This is not as good. But the library as an institution is changing, so changes in our role is to be expected. Younger librarians and an ever-growing group of tech-savvy patrons will create new relationships.?
  • ?I think it has challenged me a bit to keep up with all of the politics/trends/information that is out there. I also feel that it has made my job to select titles with my community in mind less important.?

Most library staff respondents said that they feel the availability of e-books brings new patrons into the system, although they generally did not feel that the advent of e-books necessarily brought younger readers into contact with the library more often. One librarian said that while she was happy that e-books brought in ?21st century readers,? she felt that libraries did not have enough control over the terms of this new format. ?There is not much out there in workshops dedicated to e-books because of the wariness in approaching this new form that doesn?t seem to be too library friendly,? she wrote. ?But more and more people are buying books in digital format because of ease and use. This trickles down to the library and its traditional role of lending, which makes for more patron usage.?

One of the biggest frustrations that many librarians mentioned was their new role as tech support for their community. ?Customers expect the librarians to be proficient on all mobile devices,? one branch manager wrote, adding that ?[m]ore and more the librarian?s role has evolved to that of a teacher.?

Another librarian, however, did not see the emphasis on technology as new to the role. ?Showing patrons how to use digital content and e-book readers is not much different than showing people how to use the micro-film machine or our public computers except it might take a little more time,? she said. (For more ?about this topic, please see Part 8: Future Thoughts.)

The move to e-books

Staff training

With so many patrons relying on library staff to troubleshoot their e-reading devices, the issue of training staff members themselves on those devices is an important one, according to some of the respondents. However, the training experiences of the respondents to our librarian questionnaire were mixed.

The library staff members that had the most positive training experiences often mentioned having extensive hands-on instruction with the devices, especially when the library or individual staff members were given devices on which to practice at home. Enthusiastic staff members who shared what they learned with each other, as well as flexible training programs, were also frequently cited as part of a productive training environment. Many also mentioned their personal experiences reading on these devices as useful in helping answer patrons? questions:

  • ??We had a series of online assignment for staff. We also have ?technology training kits? that hold a variety of current e-book readers, and staff can ?play? with them so they become familiar with them.?
  • ?The staff, bless them, are up to the challenge of managing this moving target. We mostly learn new devices as we encounter them?there is no way we can see them all in advance. We looked at how to download from OverDrive in a staff training session and that was helpful for the process on the web site but mostly useless for getting to individual devices. Most of our staff are personal users of e-books and e-audio so they are happy to learn how to do it.?
  • ?We provided staff training in preparation for staff providing patron training. Well-received. We also provided $75 reimbursements for staff to purchase their own e-book reader or tablet, and that was very well received and provided much hands-on learning.?
  • ?Many of us learned by trial and error along with our patrons. Those of us that had our own e-reading devices were glad to show our co-workers how they worked, and those that we savvier with the downloading process tended to receive many of the patrons asking questions. We would often look over each others? shoulders when someone would demonstrate downloading on a device we were unfamiliar with. Because we lacked a concrete plan for training, the process was difficult and we were very late in offering instruction to our patrons, thus compounding the problems we faced.?

Meanwhile, the hallmarks of poor training experiences were clearly spelled out by respondents. They included disorganized training programs, out-of-date materials, and ?theoretical? training that did not include staff members using the devices in question. A common theme was the difficulty of keeping up with the pace of technological change. ?Keeping up with procedures, formats, and devices, especially when the landscape changes daily is difficult,? one library staff member told us. ?Tutorials and handouts do not stay up to date.?

Another library staff respondent described the process as ?very difficult and ongoing?:

?There is no past tense for a system that is constantly evolving. Some staff take ownership to learn themselves, and others want to but do not grasp the fundamentals. In our library there is one person I can confidently say can answer all e-book questions, and maybe one third of our staff can manage everyday e-book questions. This is the state after multiple staff trainings and a lending program where staff were asked to take e-book readers home and practice.?

Others had similarly frustrating experiences:

  • ?It is difficult. We have an older than average workforce, many of whom do not understand concepts like DRM, formats, software issues, hardware issues. We bought two sets of e-book readers and iPads to engage in staff training, one set is in constant rotation to the branches so they can do their own staff training and patron demos. Some of the branch staff are so scared of breaking them or doing something wrong that they just lock up the case until it?s time to send it on.?
  • ?Training was difficult because staff could not gain hands-on experience. Most of us knew theoretically how to use each device, but it did not become clear until we were able to work with patrons? devices.?
  • ?Getting staff to attend the classes was like pulling teeth. We purchased various readers for staff to checkout and train themselves. For the most part, they weren?t interested in helping patrons with them. They just wanted to refer all questions to our Digital Resources Manager. It finally took Administrative staff to assign certain staff to a committee and made them learn it. Then they went out and trained others in the branches. With the advent of OverDrive making Kindle downloads available last September staff seem to be more willing to be involved in the process.?

Many respondents said that their training experiences fell somewhere in the middle. One staff member told us that the training process in her library system was ?very gradual?:

?A few early adopters learned to use OverDrive when we first subscribed and became the go-to people at their branches. Other staff learned from shadowing them and asking questions. We had a device or two at our library branch to learn the technology at our own pace. Some staff members were daunted by the technology?some are still shy to help patrons with download questions but many others bought e-book readers this year and became confident users and instructors.?

Patron training

Among the librarians who answered our online questionnaire, the vast majority of respondents said their library offered at least some form of instruction on e-readers and e-books for patrons. In-person classes and printed tutorials or FAQs were the most frequently cited forms of instruction on e-readers and the digital check-out process. Some also offered online tutorials, although these were not as popular. ?We have classes monthly and an overwhelmingly successful eight-hour drop-in day soon after Christmas, which brought 120 e-book reader users to the library,? one department head wrote.

For libraries that offered patrons training on how to use their e-reading devices, the shifting technology landscape could be overwhelming for the instructors. One librarian said that while her library initially offered classes to patrons, ?there were too many different devices and everyone wanted individual instruction on not just OverDrive, but their [specific] device.?

Most of our online patron panel said they taught themselves how to use their e-reader and download books from their library. A majority said that their library did offer classes on how to use e-readers and check out e-books, but for those whose library did not offer such classes, most said they would not be interested in attending such classes even if their library did offer them. A few others turned to YouTube tutorials, in-store help from Barnes & Noble store staff, Amazon tutorials, and various online instructions.

Cyclemeter (for iPhone)

The iPhone app Cyclemeter ($4.99) tracks, maps, and records your bicycle rides, then compiles all your data into excellent graphs and other records. And despite its name, Cyclemeter doesn't just record cycling. Other activities, from cross-country skiing to running, come preloaded so at the touch of a button, you can leverage the app for more than one sport?an enormous benefit.

What sets Cyclemeter apart from other bicycle tracking and mapping apps is you can use it without creating an online account or paying a subscription fee. Everything you need for Cyclemeter to work is right in your iPhone, unlike MapMyRide+ ($2.99, 4 stars), which sends you to its website for certain data access and tries to upsell you to a Pro account for additional stats.

Cyclemeter is accurate, rich with features and data, and works well, making it our Editors' Choice app for bicycling. It was, however, designed to be used on a handlebar mount, which could drive up the total cost. The app does function just fine if you ride with it in your bag or pocket, but you'll lose the ability to pause the app during stop times.

Rich With Features
Turn on Cyclemeter for iPhone when you start a bike ride, and it will track your speed, distance, elevation, total ride time, and stop times (so long as the app is mounted where you can easily pause and resume by tapping the screen), as well as plot your route on a map.

Speed, distance, and ride time appear live on screen while you pedal, as well as in detailed graphs when your ride is complete. When I tested the app, the distance calculations and GPS map of my routes were spot on. If you bike a particular route often, such as a home-to-office commute, you can save it to the app and use it to compare future rides. You can also add more detail about whether the route is difficult or easy, for example.

If you're a hardcore athletic type, you can add peripherals to the app, like a Bluetooth connected heart rate monitor to record even more data about your physical fitness and calorie burn. Cyclemeter also lets you connect with competitors, so you can, for example, pull another user's best time to set a new goal for yourself.

One great feature for serious cyclists is that Cyclemeter captures splits, giving you, for example, your average speed during the first five miles as compared to the second five-mile stretch.

The more you use Cyclemeter, the more items it will show in your history list, which lets you see at a snapshot the length of your rides in miles (or km if you change the settings) and time.

One feature I nearly missed is that Cyclemeter can calculate your calorie burn for rides based on your age, weight, and sex. I wish the app had prompted me to enter this tiny amount of personal data after installation. Instead, I missed out on having it for the first few rides. However, if you add your stats later, Cyclemeter does ask if you'd like to use the newly entered information to go back and recalculate calorie burn for the rides that didn't have it.

Maps
Cyclemeter uses maps powered by Google Maps, giving you the ability to switch between three different views: map form, satellite image, and hybrid satellite-map form. Start point and end markers use the familiar Google Map balloons, but Cyclemeter adds in green five-mile markers as well.

While I have no complaints about the mapping feature, one addition I would love to see is more integration with Google Maps, particularly as it adds bicycle routes and trails to its directions services. I'd love to be able to look up a destination and take off in the right direction all from the same screen.

Audio Feedback and Music
Audio feedback is another solid feature in Cyclemeter, and it's highly customizable. You can set the app to announce your progress (distance, remaining distance, speed and pace, for example) as well as your status compared with a competitor.

The app also contains pre-installed training programs for races, although they're only for runners (5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon). I'd love to see some pre-programmed plans for cycling?above and beyond basic interval training, which is included.

If you refuse to pedal without music, Cyclemeter built a special feature just for you: a pane that you can swipe to from the main window that lets you access your iPhone's music. No need to jump from app to app. You can pause, skip ahead, rewind, and toggle to a different playlist with just a few screen taps.

Cyclemeter Has More
Cyclemeter collects a wealth of data, is very accurate, contains several well thought out features, and appeals to fitness enthusiasts who participate in more than one sport. Cyclemeter is a whiz, and it's our Editors' Choice. There are even more feats this app can do that I haven't even had a chance to catalog here (sharing via social media, exporting data to spreadsheets, and on and on). Cyclists looking for a great app that captures their excitement on the road need not look further.

Salvage crews start work to refloat Costa Concordia

Salvage crews began preliminary work this week on preparations to refloat the half-submerged Costa Concordia cruise liner in what is set to be the biggest ever operation of its kind.

A barge has moved next to the liner and the ship's radar has been removed from the upper deck. The swimming pool slide and the large yellow funnel will be taken off in coming weeks, salvage workers and local officials said.

The nearly 1,000-foot cruise liner, operated by Carnival Corp's Costa Cruises unit, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio after hitting rocks on January 13. At least 30 people died and two are still unaccounted for.

"The preliminary work has begun before the ship is stabilized, which will happen in the next few months," Mayor of Giglio, Sergio Ortelli, said on Wednesday.

U.S. firm Titan Salvage, owned by Crowley Maritime Corp, and Italian firm Micoperi are handling the refloat and removal of the ship, which is set to cost at least $300 million and last about a year.

The vessel is expected to be stabilized by the end of August to prevent it shifting down the rocky ledge it is resting on and plunging into the deep waters of the surrounding marine reserve.

Slideshow: Luxury cruise ship runs aground (on this page)

Two cranes attached to an underwater platform beside the 114,500-metric-ton ship will then pull it upright, helped by the weight of big water-filled tanks that will be fitted on the part of the ship above water.

Once upright, more tanks will be fitted to the other side of the hull. They will then be emptied and filled with air to refloat the huge liner, which will be towed to an Italian port and broken up.

The ship's owner has said guarantees for the local tourist industry and protection of the environment during the salvage operation will be key priorities.

Diane DiResta: Speak Powerfully, Sell More: Grow Your Business With Public Speaking

A consultant spoke at an investor relations conference. She met the CFO of a Middle Eastern technology company. They exchanged cards, but there was no time to talk. A year later, when the company was looking for consulting services, the CFO recommended the consultant. That led to a $50,000 contract -- all from one speech!

In today's economy, small businesses are hard-pressed to grow. Advertising is expensive and business owners can't compete with corporate budgets. A brand gets buried in the cacophony of 24/7 marketing messages.

There's an easy, cost-effective way to rise above the noise. It's called speakmarketing.

Speaking levels the playing field because there's little to no cost to giving a presentation. It increases visibility of your brand, establishes your expertise and creates trust because you're up front and personal with potential customers.

Speaking is the new competitive advantage. According to Charlotte Beers, former CEO of Ogilvy & Mathers Worldwide, "Business is one presentation after another." Whether it's an elevator speech to your network, a pitch for funding or a sales presentation, your success depends on how well you present yourself, your message and your value to the market.

With everyone jumping on the social media bandwagon, it's easy to forget the power of high-touch, face-to-face communication. We're connected technologically, but people feel more disconnected than ever. Speaking is a powerful marketing tool because it gives people an experience. To reap the rewards, there are three things you need:

? A defined target market
? Compelling content
? Good platform skills

Defined Target Market

Just like in a tradeshow, your buyer must be there. It's fine to speak at a rotary club if your market is small business. But if your target is senior executives, you're better served speaking at think tanks, round tables and industry conventions.

Compelling Content

How do you draw an audience and keep them there once they've arrived? A well-written announcement can create buzz and increase attendance. People often choose to hear a speaker based on a clever write-up. The secret to attracting a large turnout is the title of your talk. Titles sell. Don't confuse a topic with a title. For example: "All Stressed Out and No One to Choke" is a title that really resonates with the audience and elicits a feeling of being out of control. It's certainly more interesting than "Stress Management 101."

The biggest mistake in speakmarketing is to give a commercial. You must have value to offer today's busy, distracted audiences. The most effective networking presentations are those that offer practical tips and new information that makes people think.

Good platform skills

Even the best content needs to be delivered in a dynamic and compelling way. Remember Ben Stein's teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? If you speak in a monotone and drone on without getting to the point, your audience will take the day off.

Make sure you deliver what you promise. Avoid the bait and switch technique of luring an audience with enticing promotions, only to talk about something that leaves them cold. If you write about saving for your child's college fund, don't suddenly talk about investing in life insurance.

And when you're talking about your product, don't hard sell from the platform -- use the law of attraction. Your call to action should be a free offer that entices people to approach you. For those who don't take advantage of your offer, you can still capture leads by raffling off a promotional item -- a book, a CD, or a sample product. And by the way, people will kill for t-shirts!

Finally, it's not over 'til it's over. Even the best speakers often fail to grow their business because they don't follow up within 24 - 48 hours of the presentation. You spent all that time creating the bait, don't let them off the hook. There's another competing message just around the corner.
