This Is How Big the Internet Is [Internet]

The internet is a big and amorphous thing to talk about. What's it made of? Web pages? Articles? Facebook? Stuff you can blow up? How about just how much people actually use it. According to Cisco, we chewed through 30.7 exabytes per month last year. That's the equivalent of about 16 billion 5GB HD movies. More »

The Travis McGee Reader: Shots Fired!

I'm in my gun-tinkering room. I've reshaped the lips of the Colt Huntsman magazine. I check my work by unloading five fast ones into a big billet of oak. Three minutes and 55 seconds later I'm cuffed up and a cop is reading me my rights.*

I've been ratted out by a geek in Mountain View.

It's the latest ?Telescreen?precursor, called "ShotSpotter, an aural triangulation system ?made mighty by the magic of communications satellites, the GPS, ?and warp-speed computing. ?If it isn't universal yet, it 's not for lack of desire by cops, prosecutors, and the company that owns the system,

Trusted members of the Outer Party visit your neighborhood and nail sensors to utility poles, buildings, and so forth. The gizmos hear a shot and instantly inform the watchers who, again with speed-of-light communications, tell the local cops. The company propaganda boasts location accuracy of within a few yards. It's a real crime-stopper.

So was the Tell-All Tube in the shabby room over the antique shop where Winston boffed Julia.

---

The Times superficially?reports the usual privacy vs. security debate, which is revealing in itself because, wonder of wonders, the same system can also record conversations.

Sam Sutter, the district attorney in Bristol County, Mass., called ShotSpotter ?an extremely valuable tool? that had helped his office bring charges in four nonfatal shootings.

?In my view legally,? he said, ?what is said and picked up by the ShotSpotter recording does not have the expectation of privacy because it?s said out in public, and so I think that will turn out to be admissible evidence.?

The company jumps on that PR problem:

James G. Beldock, a vice president at ShotSpotter, said that the system was not intended to record anything except gunshots and that cases like New Bedford?s were extremely rare. ?There are people who perceive that these sensors are triggered by conversations, but that is just patently not true,? he said. ?They don?t turn on unless they hear a gunshot.?

Very reassuring, James. We are relieved that your bug is so limited that there is no way on earth to tune it to pick up conversation without an announcing gun shot. ?I hope someone alerts me when your technology advances to that point so I can be careful ?to say nothing seditious in the public space which I usually refer to as my front yard.

Antioxidant shows promise as treatment for certain features of autism

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A specific antioxidant supplement may be an effective therapy for some features of autism, according to a pilot trial from the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital that involved 31 children with the disorder.

The antioxidant, called N-Acetylcysteine, or NAC, lowered irritability in children with autism as well as reducing the children's repetitive behaviors. The researchers emphasized that the findings must be confirmed in a larger trial before NAC can be recommended for children with autism.

Irritability affects 60 to 70 percent of children with autism. "We're not talking about mild things: This is throwing, kicking, hitting, the child needing to be restrained," said Antonio Hardan, MD, the primary author of the new study. "It can affect learning, vocational activities and the child's ability to participate in autism therapies."

The study appears in the June 1 issue of Biological Psychiatry. Hardan is an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford and director of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic at Packard Children's. Stanfordis filing a patent for the use of NAC in autism, and one of the study authors has a financial stake in a company that makes and sells the NAC used in the trial.

Finding new medications to treat autism and its symptoms is a high priority for researchers. Currently, irritability, mood swings and aggression, all of which are considered associated features of autism, are treated with second-generation antipsychotics. But these drugs cause significant side effects, including weight gain, involuntary motor movements and metabolic syndrome, which increases diabetes risk. By contrast, side effects of NAC are generally mild, with gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, nausea, diarrhea and decreased appetite being the most common.

The state of drug treatments for autism's core features, such as social deficits, language impairment and repetitive behaviors, is also a major problem. "Today, in 2012, we have no effective medication to treat repetitive behavior such as hand flapping or any other core features of autism," Hardan said. NAC could be the first medication available to treat repetitive behavior in autism -- if the findings hold up when scrutinized further.

The study tested children with autism ages 3 to 12. They were physically healthy and were not planning any changes in their established autism treatments during the trial. In a double-blind study design, children received NAC or a placebo for 12 weeks. The NAC used was a pharmaceutical-grade preparation donated by the drug manufacturer Bioadvantex Inc. Subjects were evaluated before the trial began and every four weeks during the study using several standardized surveys that measure problem behaviors, social behaviors, autistic preoccupations and drug side effects.

During the 12-week trial, NAC treatment decreased irritability scores from 13.1 to 7.2 on the Aberrant Behavior Checklist, a widely used clinical scale for assessing irritability. The change is not as large as that seen in children taking antipsychotics. "But this is still a potentially valuable tool to have before jumping on these big guns," Hardan said.

In addition, according to two standardized measures of autism mannerisms and stereotypic behavior, children taking NAC showed a decrease in repetitive and stereotyped behaviors.

"One of the reasons I wanted to do this trial was that NAC is being used by community practitioners who focus on alternative, non-traditional therapies," Hardan said. "But there is no strong scientific evidence to support these interventions. Somebody needs to look at them."

Hardan cautioned that the NAC for sale as a dietary supplement at drugstores and grocery stores differs in some important respects from the individually packaged doses of pharmaceutical-grade NAC used in the study, and that the over-the-counter version may not produce the same results. "When you open the bottle from the drugstore and expose the pills to air and sunlight, it gets oxidized and becomes less effective," he said.

Although the study did not test how NAC works, the researchers speculated on two possible mechanisms of action. NAC increases the capacity of the body's main antioxidant network, which some previous studies have suggested is deficient in autism. In addition, other research has suggested that autism is related to an imbalance in excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain. NAC can modulate the glutamatergic family of excitatory neurotransmitters, which might be useful in autism.

The scientists are now applying for funding to conduct a large, multicenter trial in which they hope to replicate their findings.

"This was a pilot study," Hardan said. "Final conclusions cannot be made before we do a larger trial."

The research was supported by a grant from the Escher Family Fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Herzenberg and Tirouvanziam are listed as inventors on two patents for NAC used for treating cystic fibrosis that are licensed by Bioadvantex Inc., which supplied NAC for the trial. Herzenberg also has equity in Bioadvantex.

Injured Passenger Initiates Unsual Car Accident Compensation Claim

An unusual car accident compensation claim has been initiated by a woman who sustained serious personal injuries in a car accident whilst abroad in Poland. The woman is seeking ?300,000 in personal injury damages for the incident. The car accident compensation claim writ was recently submitted to the High Court in London and picked up on by a local newspaper named the Huddersfield Daily Journal. It seems that the woman, who is 28 years old is a local to the area, was riding as a passenger in the back seat of the car. A family member was driving the Fiat punto which was insured by a Polish company. Their small vehicle collided with a BMW whilst approaching a cross-junction in the road and the blame for the incident is being put on the Fiat driver.

The woman, who now lives Jagger Lane which is in Honley, is filing the car accident compensation claim against the Polish insurance company of the car in which she was riding as a passenger. The Polish insurance company is based in Poland?s capital, Warsaw and has representatives in the United Kingdom at Inter Europe in Trafford Park in Manchester. The legal team representing the woman state that the personal injury claim must be met as the insurance company is bound by Polish Law to do so. The man driving the Fiat was facing a conviction in June of last year but had his jail sentence suspended by a three year probationary period at the Polish courts. The car accident took place in the south of Poland near a small town called Skoczow which is close to this Silesian foothills.

The list of extensive personal injuries sustained in car accident include fractures to sacral bones and a series of complex fractures sustained to the woman?s right leg. Also reported is a fractured left collarbone, fractures in the neck, a fractured pelvis and also a brain injury. The car accident compensation claim writ states that the woman still suffers to this day due to the personal injuries which happened in the beginning of last year. So far, it?s thought that this car accident happened as the Fiat driver was negligent and failed to pay sufficient attention to the road in order to spot the BMW at the junction. The outcome of this road traffic accident claim remains to be seen.

Explay Crystal revives transparent display phones with dash of color, low price

Image

If you've been lamenting the passing of transparent display phones like the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness as those vile, opaque smartphones took over, you'll be happy to know that Russia's Explay has taken up the mantle with the Crystal. The basic song remains the same, a numberpad-driven dumbphone with a display that will help you avoid the lamp post up ahead, but it's remixed through colors that render the experience a lot less monotone. We saw this in the Lenovo S800, but the dual SIM card slots and Bluetooth 3.0 at least see the Crystal keep pace with more recent phones in its category. By far the biggest advantage Explay has over its ancestors is pure cost: at 7,000 rubles ($218), it's less than half the $500 that Lenovo wanted and that much more palatable for a handset that isn't running a sophisticated OS like Android or Windows Phone. Russians have to wait until July 1st to pick up the Crystal, but wouldn't count on the see-through phone seeing its way to the US through official channels.

80's Gamer Mancave: The Complete Vintage Video Game Experience!

The popularity of Man Caves is growing by leaps and bounds. The feminine touch, once confined to the Kitchen, has spread to the living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, hallway and even the lawn! This leaves the average guy wondering what part of the house is HIS part of the house.

By now, most people are familial with the DIY Network show ?Man Caves,? hosted by former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Tony ?the Goose? Siragusa. The show follows Goose as he transforms unused garages, attics, basements or spare rooms into the ultimate monument to testosterone. But what about the average blue collar guy that doesn?t have $20,000 to sink into transforming their spare room into a man cave?

Well, if your reading this, you already know that I love vintage video games. I also love almost anything from the 1980?s. So guess what theme my man cave takes on? Now I am far from rich. In fact, I am usually playing catch up on the utility bills. But for next to nothing, I turned my extra room into an oasis of 80?s tech that my roommates often refer to as ?That 80?s Room? all without spending more than $200! Here?s how:

FURNITURE: First off you need furniture, and since you will probably be sitting on your butt for several hours playing video games, you need comfy furniture. The great thing about an 80?s themed room is it requires 80?s themed furniture. This is something the world has in abundance. You can find old furniture at thift stores, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, or even sitting out by the curb on big trash pick-up day. I picked up a very vintage looking dining table with 4 swivel chairs at the local thrift store. It had been sitting around unsold for quite some time so I was able to get it all for $5. I recycled a bookcase I found on the curb down the street from my house, which was free, to hold my systems and games.

ELECTRONICS: No man cave (especially a vintage video game man cave) would be complete without a huge compliment of electronics. Lets start out with the tv. It is a mid-1990?s 27 inch Magnavox that a friend was just going to throw out when he upgraded to flat screen. (NOTE: It is important, not just for nostalga but for functionality, to get an older tube type tv as opposed to plasma or flat screen because for some reason, attachments such as the NES lightgun DO NOT work on flat screens!) So the TV was free.

GAMING STUFF: Connected to this is a Playstation 1, an Atari 2600, an Atari 7800, and my RetroN 3 which plays NES, Super NES and Sega Genesis games. I also have more than 150 games for the systems mentioned above. All of this was mostly aquired through trade. I would venture to say that I spent less than $100 in actual cash on all my video games and systems.

And what 80?s themed room would be complete without a rockin? Hi Fi system? This actually proved to be the hardest thing to get. Everyone over the age of 30 has a record player sitting in their basement. The downside is that most of them don?t work anymore. I bought 4 record players before I got one that worked. Of the other 3, one had a seized up motor, the other had no sound, the other had to many problems to mention. BUT since most of these Hi Fi all in ones are just sitting around collecting dust, you can get them very cheap. For all 4 I paid a total of about 20 bucks. The one that actually worked cost me $2. It is also my favorite as it includes an AM/FM stereo and a built in 8-track player! I also picked up some records for 25 cents each!

The great thing about putting a man cave together like this is that it is almost a hobby just assembling the room. My room is not finished, as I want to keep adding little touches here and there. At the top of my list right now is a working Apple Macintosh Classic computer, and some more wall hangings.? I?ll keep you up to date!

US slammed from both sides of Bahrain's divide

A Bahraini man talks on his phone as he walks past pictures of prisoners held in connection with the pro-democracy uprising in the Gulf nation Sunday, May 27, 2012, in the western village of Karzakan, Bahrain. An elderly Bahraini man rests in front of a wall painted with graffiti that reads, "blood is the price of freedom," Sunday, May 27, 2012, in the western village of Malkiya, Bahrain. Amid the ongoing pro-democracy uprising in the Gulf nation, a Bahrain court sentenced eight people to prison terms of up to 15 years Sunday after they were accused of plotting with suspected Iranian agents to topple the Gulf kingdom's ruling system, a defense lawyer said. (AP Photo/Hasan Jamali)

(AP) ? During one of the nightly clashes with Bahrain's security forces, a new chant broke out among opposition protesters: "The U.S. is the great Satan." A few days later, pro-government marchers also waved their fists against Washington.

In a place with almost no common ground left after more than 15 months of Arab Spring-inspired unrest, both sides in the Bahrain meltdown are finding a shared target in the United States.

Their gripes are vastly different ? protesters claiming the U.S. has ignored them, government backers expecting full loyalty from their longtime allies ? but the across-the-board potshots at Washington's policies point to the deep complexities of U.S. attempts to navigate the crisis in the tiny Gulf kingdom.

Bahrain tugs at just about every critical Gulf issue for Washington. Atop the list: America's relations with Saudi Arabia as the main patron for the embattled Bahraini monarchy, and the stability of the Bahrain-based headquarters of the Navy's 5th Fleet, which is one of the Pentagon's main counterweights to Iranian military influence in the Gulf.

At the same time, the nonstop clashes in Bahrain ? and at least 50 deaths since February 2011 ? have brought critical remarks from Washington about alleged human rights abuses and claims of heavy-handed police tactics.

"But there's really only so much Washington can say," said Toby Jones, an expert on Bahraini affairs at Rutgers University. "There's just too much at stake for U.S. interests."

This is the slow-drip anger building up among the protesters led by Bahrain's Shiite majority.

Their demands began last year with calls for a greater say in the country's affairs, which are tightly run by the ruling Sunni dynasty. The protest cries gradually sharpened to urge for the downfall of the Western-backed king and his inner circle.

In a similar way, the demonstrations once reached out to America for the same moral support given to uprisings in Egypt and elsewhere. In recent weeks, however, the tone toward the U.S. has darkened as protesters feel abandoned by President Barack Obama.

Banners at anti-government rally earlier this month denounced America's "double standard."

"Obama supports the killers, not democracy and freedom," said one message. Another carried a picture of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton with the lines: "U.S. interests comes before our freedom." Some protesters burned handmade Stars and Stripes.

"Obama is the one who had people chanting about change and to fight for what's right," said Naba Ali, a 35-year-old woman who works as a sales clerk. "We Bahrainis were inspired by him. And now he has turned his back on us."

The State Department has issued many statements critical of Bahrain's crackdowns, such as arrest sweeps and job purges, and use of temporary martial law-style rule last year to convict activists in a special security court. Clinton warned Bahrain it was on the "wrong track" by bringing in Saudi-led forces last year as reinforcements.

Bahrain, in turn, has taken some steps toward reform, including ordering retrials in civilian courts and giving the elected parliament more sway to question and oversee the king's hand-picked government.

Last week in Geneva, Bahraini envoys told the U.N.'s top human rights body that the country would consider recommendations to release political prisoners, outlaw torture and join the International Criminal Court, a move that could open it to international prosecutions of alleged abuses.

Opposition groups immediately dismissed the pledges as smoke screens. But it highlighted the shifting positions for U.S. policymakers on Bahrain.

Earlier this month, the U.S. said it would resume some military sales to Bahrain after suspending shipments amid the crackdowns. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland described Bahrain's ability to ride out the unrest as a "a critical component of our commitment to Gulf security."

Yet she also cited U.S. concerns about "serious unresolved human rights issues" in Bahrain and reports of "excessive use of force" by riot police, which has been accused by rights groups of using birdshot at close range and firing tear gas into homes.

The U.S. decision brought backlash from both sides.

Anti-government protesters chanted against Washington for the planned shipments, even though U.S. official say they do not include crowd control weapons. Hard-line government supporters, meanwhile, blasted the U.S. for its remarks about rights issues.

At one pro-government rally last week, people mocked "Ayatollah Obama" for U.S. comments they claimed as supportive of the Shiite opposition ? which Bahrain authorities say is encouraged by Shiite power Iran.

Banners in Sunni neighborhoods often portray the U.S. as turning its back on Bahrain.

A court Sunday sentenced six people to prison terms of up to 15 years after they were accused of plotting with suspected Iranian agents to topple the kingdom's ruling system, a defense lawyer said.

The convictions ? which include three activists put on trial in absentia ? reflect mounting claims by Gulf Arab states that Iran has links to the Shiite-led uprising against Bahrain's Sunni dynasty. Iranian leaders have denounced crackdowns against protesters in Bahrain, but deny any active aid to the demonstrations.

The group was accused of plotting with a "foreign country" ? a clear reference to Iran ? to bring down Bahrain's Western-allied monarchy. They also were suspected of planning possible attacks on high-profile targets such as the Interior Ministry headquarters and the causeway connecting Bahrain with Saudi Arabia, which is Iran's main regional rival.

They denied the charges.

The defense lawyer, Mohsin al-Alawi, said the court sentenced six people to 15 years in prison. Three of those were sentenced in absentia, including the son of jailed activist Hassan Mushaima, who is trying to overturn a life sentence imposed last year because of links to the protests. His son, Ali Mushaima, was arrested last month in London after occupying the rooftop of the Bahraini Embassy with other activists.

Al-Alawi says two others received lesser sentences Sunday and were freed because they had already spent six months in detention.

Spanish debt costs spiral as crisis deepens

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish 10-year borrowing costs neared the 7 percent danger level and Bankia shares hit record lows on Monday after the government, struggling to sort out its finances, proposed putting sovereign debt into the struggling lender.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy pinned the blame for the rising borrowing costs - the spread over Germany reached the highest since the euro's launch - on concern about the future of the single currency. He again ruled out seeking outside aid to revive a banking sector laid low by a property boom that has long since bust.

"There are major doubts over the euro zone and that makes the risk premium for some countries very high. That's why it would be a very good idea to deliver a clear message there's no going back for the euro," Rajoy told a news conference.

"There will not be any (European) rescue for the Spanish banking system."

He gave no details of bank recapitalization plans but backed calls for the euro zone bailout fund, which will be in place from July, to be able to lend to banks direct.

Government sources told Reuters Spain may shore up Bankia with sovereign bonds in return for shares in the bank and could use this method to prop up other troubled lenders - moves which would push the country's debts above the 79.8 percent of economic output which had been expected this year.

"This method has been used by Germany and by Ireland in the past, it is perfectly valid," a government source told Reuters.

The source said the ECB had not been specifically informed of the plans to inject state bonds into Bankia. A final decision had not yet been made on which option to take.

Bankia's parent company BFA has asked for 19 billion euros ($23.8 billion) in government help, in addition to 4.5 billion the state has already pumped in to cover possible losses on repossessed property, loans and investments.

Investors increasingly believe weak banks, undermined by the collapse four years ago of a decade-long property boom, coupled with heavily indebted regions, could force Spain to seek an international bailout which the euro zone can barely afford.

LACK OF CONFIDENCE

The premium investors require to hold Spanish government bonds over German counterparts hit a euro-era high at 505 basis points, denoting a lack of confidence in Madrid's efforts to stabilize its finances and ailing banks.

Having dropped to around 4.7 percent earlier this year, helped by the ECB's creation of a glut of three-year money, 10-year borrowing costs are now approaching 6.5 percent and closing in on the 7 percent level widely seen as unsustainable.

Ireland and Portugal were frozen out of capital markets and forced to seek international bailouts soon after their yields topped 7 percent.

"If it goes on for much longer, it just adds to the burden of fiscal consolidation," said Elisabeth Afseth, analyst at Investec in London. "If a large part of that is spent on paying a premium to borrow, it just makes it so much harder."

Spain's trump card is that it has issued well over half the debt it needs to this year, in the first five months.

But that advantage is being eroded.

The government said last week its highly indebted regions faced 36 billion euros of debt refinancing bills this year, way above the previously stated 8 billion. Catalonia said it was running out of options and needed central government help.

A plan to recapitalize Bankia with Spanish government bonds, which the bank could then use as collateral to get cash from the ECB, could add to the government's refinancing problems.

Spain's Treasury insisted it would repay debt maturing without problems.

"We are in a very strong position (to meet debt maturing shortly)," said Ignacio Fernandez Palomero, deputy director of public debt at the Treasury, pointing to redemptions in July and October, when Spain has big amounts due.

Spain's central government and regions need to refinance 117.5 billion euros of debt by the end of the year, while funding a deficit worth 52 billion euros.

It has already shifted more than 55 percent of its debt issuance for the year but about half of the remaining debt maturing in 2012 will have to be repaid in the last three months of the year, making it imperative borrowing costs have been brought down by then.

THUMBS DOWN FROM MARKETS

Bankia parent BFA is set to report the biggest loss in Spain's banking history.

"The figures are much higher than any other release from any other bank," a financial source with direct knowledge of the bank's situation told Reuters.

Despite the 23.5 billion euros rescue cued up for Bankia, its shares tumbled by about 13 percent, pressuring some weaker peers. Its drastic hike in provisions to cover potential losses from repossessed property and souring consumer debt has raised the prospects that other banks may need to do the same.

A wider audit of Spain's banking system should reveal by June what capital gap other banks will need to fill.

"The events at Bankia will reinforce the view that the upcoming external review should identify a significant recapitalization need for the Spanish banking system," analysts at Nomura said in a note, putting a recapitalization of the whole sector at between 50 and 60 billion euros, with the main listed banks requiring an additional 16 billion euros.

Nomura said only BBVA, Santander and Sabadell would not need to strengthen their capital, while the government would need to clean up smaller lenders it has already propped up, such as Banco de Valencia, Novacaixagalicia and Catalunya Caixa.

"Given the current economic and political uncertainties facing the euro zone, this could see additional pressure on Spain to consider using external funds for the bank recapitalisation," Nomura said.

Alyssa (Important Nobody) vs. Claire (DarkManticoreX2)

It was around mid-afternoon in the empty village, a village that was, like it's namesake, devoid of any inhabitants for over 100 years. For all things considered the village was in good shape and offered no explanation as to why everybody living there suddenly left. Alyssa was intrigued by the mystery and had been exploring for the better part of the day, finding an old ruin beneath the village that was just as empty, even of treasure. While nothing was accomplished, she did have a fun time and wasn't in a bad mood. Instead she used her remaining time until dinner doing light exercise and a stretching routine inside a dojo. Her body moved more gracefully and powerfully then a normal human with minimal exertion on herself in the process. She was dressed simply in a white midriff top and light brown pants that extended halfway down her calves. A pair of boots, a brown jacket, and a belt with vials was discarded near a corner. She was forced to wear shoes to cover up a special birthmark on the bottom of her left foot, but now that her secret was out in the open she would taken them off every chance she got. During her exploration she needed all the extra items of clothing, but at the moment she just wanted some time to relax, and this routine of hers hit the spot.

After another series of stretches she scooped up a weapon was resting next to her; a blunt silver rod attached to a red handle and a golden hand guard in the shape of a square. Small openings were placed along the fancy designs of the rod, and inside was the hint of glittering red. After a few practice swings she will have finished her routine and would be going back to her home for some more series training with Diamond, a women with similar powers to her own, yet on a whole different level.

President, to president, to president - Los Angeles Times

"You will be our president when you read this note," George Herbert Walker Bush wrote to Bill Clinton, the man who defeated him in the 1992 campaign, denying Bush the provisional vindication that reelection provides until history has its chance to judge from a distance. Nonetheless, in Oval Office tradition, Bush left a note for Clinton to read on taking office, and it echoed the message of transitions past, even between bitter political rivals: "I am rooting hard for you."

Note the pronoun: You will be our president. My president. In our interviews and research into the private relations among these most public men, the pronouns matter. At a time when Democrats and Republicans in Congress talk past each other and their supporters view collaboration as corrupt, presidents talk to, and about, one another in very particular ways.

"President Obama and I didn't talk much about politics when we played golf the other day," Clinton told us, as we discussed the distinctive code of the "Presidents Club." Clinton was exhausted that day, he recalled, but "when my president summons me, then I come and I would play golf in a driving snowstorm." Which suggests how far the two men had come since their proxy war in 2008.

The offers of help come, often across party lines, because former presidents know what incoming presidents only learn over time.

On the day Franklin Roosevelt died and Harry Truman found himself suddenly responsible for saving the free world, Herbert Hoover sent a cable. "You have the right to call for any service in aid of the country," Hoover wrote, and to the horror of the Roosevelt loyalists in the White House, Truman took him up on the offer. He invited Hoover to the White House to ask his expert advice about preventing a humanitarian catastrophe across Europe. Once they got past their mutual suspicions, the two presidents formed an extraordinary alliance to move food from the countries that had it to the ones that needed it.

That was only the first of their joint missions. It didn't matter that Truman thought Hoover was "to the right of Louis XIV," he said. They never talked about politics anyway because they had something more important in common. "We talked," Truman said, "about what it was like being president."

So did Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy ? when they finally got around to talking at all. Here again were two men with little use for each other, after a campaign in which Kennedy portrayed Eisenhower as too staid, even too soft, allowing a supposed "missile gap" with the Soviet Union.

By October 1960, Ike told one Oval Office visitor, "Listen, dammit, I'm going to do everything possible to keep that Jack Kennedy from sitting in this chair." Ike called Kennedy "Little Boy Blue"; Kennedy referred to Ike as "that old ass?."

But upon Kennedy's election, the stakes would change, and so did the conversation. When they met at the White House in December 1960, Eisenhower tried to alert Kennedy to what was coming. "No easy matters will ever come to you as president," Eisenhower warned him. "If they are easy, they will be settled at a lower level." So how you organize your staff matters, he explained, and he wrote that night in his diary that "I pray that he understands it."

Only a few months later, the two men picked up their conversation ? following the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion. The language of presidential transition is formal, instructive, supportive; now that they were both presidents, it was raw.

"No one knows how tough this job is until he has been in it a few months," Kennedy admitted.

"Mr. President," Eisenhower replied, "if you will forgive me, I think I mentioned that to you three months ago."

"I certainly have learned a lot since," replied Kennedy.

And they talked about how the whole thing had gone wrong. But when they talked to reporters afterward, Eisenhower pledged his support; he ordered his fellow Republicans to resist "witch-hunting." The New York Times headline read "Eisenhower Urges Nation to Back Kennedy on Cuba," with a photo of the two men walking together at Camp David. That was a photo Kennedy very much needed.

If ever a president needed the solace of this tight fraternity, it was Lyndon Johnson. Barely an hour after Kennedy died, he walked into the cabin of Air Force One to be sworn in as president, and aides who were like family suddenly jumped to their feet. "It was at that moment I realized nothing would be the same again," Johnson recalled. "A wall ? high, forbidding, historic ? separated us now."

That night Johnson called both Truman and Eisenhower. "I have needed you for a long time," Johnson told Ike, "but I need you more than ever now."

"Any time you need me, Mr. President," Ike said, "I'll be there."

And indeed he drove to Washington the next day, to view Kennedy's casket lying in state and then sit with Johnson and offer his help. Johnson wanted to know what specifically he should do. So Eisenhower got a legal pad and sat in Johnson's outer office, writing out in longhand what Johnson should say to an emergency joint session of Congress.

He asked the secretary who typed his notes to burn them after and make only two copies, one for Johnson and one for himself.

And what was that advice, from a revered, retired Republican president to a suddenly elevated Democratic one? That Johnson would carry out "the noble objectives so often and so eloquently stated by your great predecessor." Eisenhower knew what the country needed at that moment; it was not a time for partisan positioning.

And so it has been. Though heartsick over his loss in 1976, Jerry Ford helped Jimmy Carter get started on a handful of projects even before Carter was sworn in. Clinton called Richard Nixon late at night to talk about Russia and to learn how to organize his day ? a mystery that Nixon recalled having as well. Late in his second term, George W. Bush often called Clinton on Sundays, and the two men talked, mostly about politics, in a coded, sentence-finishing vernacular that a top Bush aide described as nearly unintelligible even to him.

It's true that presidents have their feuds, many of them bitter and long-lasting. But by and large the code remains intact. Just recently, Bush gently took issue with Barack Obama's energy and tax policies, and then he added, "I don't think it's good, frankly, for our country to undermine our president. I don't intend to do so now."

U.N. says over 92 killed in Syria, 32 of them children

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United Nations said on Saturday that more than 92 people were killed in what activists described as an artillery barrage by government forces in the worst violence since the start of a U.N. peace plan to slow the flow of blood in Syria's uprising.

The bloodied bodies of children, some with their skulls split open, were shown in footage posted to YouTube purporting to show the victims of the shelling in the central town of Houla on Friday. The sound of wailing filled the room.

The carnage underlined just how far Syria is from any negotiated path out of the 14-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

"This morning U.N. military and civilian observers went to Houla and counted more than 32 children under the age of 10 and over 60 adults killed," the head of U.N. team monitoring the ceasefire - which has yet to take hold - said.

"The observers confirmed from examination of ordinances the use of artillery tank shells," Major General Robert Mood said in a statement, without elaborating. "Whoever started, whoever responded and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence should be held responsible."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the attack.

"Those who perpetrated this atrocity must be identified and held to account," she said in a statement. "And the United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end."

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded "the government of Syria immediately cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers."

Activists said Assad's forces shelled the town of Houla on Friday evening after security forces killed a protester and following skirmishes between troops and fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency fighting Syria's rulers, who belong to the minority Alawite sect.

A British-based opposition group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Houla residents fled, fearing more shelling. It said one person was killed in the northern town of Saraqeb when troops fired on a protest against the killing.

Syrian state television aired some of the footage disseminated by activists after the killing in Houla, calling the bodies victims of a massacre committed by "terrorist" gangs.

It also showed video of bodies with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head, sprawled on bloodstained mattresses.

Activists distributed footage appearing to show protests in Aleppo, the largest city in the north.

    FAMILIES KILLED

A member of the fragmented exile group that says it speaks for Syria's political opposition said Assad's forces had killed "entire families" in Houla in addition to the shelling.

"The Syrian National Council (SNC) urges the U.N. Security Council to call for an emergency meeting ... and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in the face of such mass killings," SNC spokeswoman Bassma Kodmani said.

Although a 6-week-old ceasefire plan negotiated by former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan has failed to stop the violence, the United Nations is nearing full deployment of a 300-strong unarmed observer force meant to monitor a truce.

The plan calls for a truce, withdrawal of troops from cities and dialogue between the government and opposition.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the violence as a "massacre" and said he wanted to arrange a meeting in Paris of the Friends of Syria, a group that brings together Western and Arab countries keen to remove Assad.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was coordinating a "strong response" to the killings and would call for the Security Council to meet in the coming days.

United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abudllah bin Zayed al-Nahayan requested an urgent meeting of the Arab League while Arab League head Nabil Elaraby called the killing in Houla a "horrific crime."

Elaraby urged the U.N. Security Council - where Russia and China have protected Syria - to "stop the escalation of killing and violence by armed gangs and government military forces."

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to an insurgency led by Syria's majority Sunnis against Assad.

    "TERRORIST GROUPS"

Ban said on Friday that recent bomb attacks may have been the work of "established terrorist groups" and urged states not to supply arms to either the government or rebel forces.

"Those who may contemplate supporting any side with weapons, military training or other military assistance, must reconsider such options to enable a sustained cessation of violence," he told the Security Council in a letter.

The United Nations has accused Assad's forces and insurgents alike of grave human rights abuses, including summary executions and torture.

Ban also has expressed fear that Syria's conflict will destabilize neighboring Lebanon, whose delicate sect-based politics has been shaken by tensions among Lebanese foes and friends of the uprising in Syria.

In the latest episode, gunmen in northern Syria snatched a group of Lebanese Shi'ites this week as they were returning from a religious pilgrimage, deepening unrest after sectarian fighting in northern Lebanon and battles between pro- and anti-Syrian Sunni factions in the capital over the last two weeks.

Uncertainty over their increased tension in Beirut on Saturday, a day after Lebanon's top officials said the release of the hostages and their return home was imminent. Shi'ites had blocked roads and burned tires after hearing of the abduction.

The prime minister said on Friday afternoon they had been freed but by Saturday there was still no sign of them. A member of the SNC said they still were in captivity, further angering a crowd that had gathered at Beirut's airport to meet them.

More Records for Obama & Obamanomics: Record Low for High School Students Jobs and Record High for Those Working Past Age 65

    ?

Hey America, Three plus years into the Obama Presidency, How?s that ?Hopey-Changey? thing working out for ya? More records for Obama and jobs ??

Parents, are you finding it difficult for your high school kids to get summer jobs? You are not alone. Thanks to the Barack Obama job recovery we can add two more records to his list of accomplishments, the young workers are getting squeezed out of the market because positions are being filled by older workers. Making matters worse, the elderly cannot afford to retire. As reported at the Washington Times, according to the National Center for Education Statistics the high school job market has hit its lowest level in 20 years. The jobs once held by young high school kids are now being taken by those older than them who have been forced to take lesser positions thanks to the so-called Obama job recovery. A meager 16% of high school age kids are now employed as opposed to 32% in 1990.

The American job market is no place for students as the number of employed high schoolers has hit its lowest level in more than 20 years, according to new figures from the National Center for Education Statistics.

In 1990, 32 percent of high school students held jobs, versus just 16 percent now. Blame their elders.

Sectors that traditionally have offered teens their first paying gig ? fast-food chains, movie theaters, malls and big-box retailers ? have now become the last resorts for out-of-work college graduates or older Americans forced back into the labor force out of sheer financial necessity. The resulting squeeze has left students on the outside looking in.

No one need look no further than the McJobless. Our American youth used to be able to get a job at McDonald?s after school and learn what it means to be responsible, show up for work and get paid for a days work. Not under Barack Obama. Businesses that used to predominately hire the HS kids now can hire older and more experienced workers at the same pay.

Local McDonald?s managers, for example, are no longer forced to accept young workers who can show up after class. They now have the option to hire older employees with more experience and, in many cases, much more education.

?They think, ?I can hire this old guy instead. He already knows how to work, so we don?t need to teach him.??

But wait, it gets worse if that is possible. Not only are young workers at an all-time low, those individuals working who are 65 years and older are at an all-time high. They simply cannot afford to retire. As reported at the NY Times, But that may have worsened the employment prospects for younger workers. Ya think?

Labor Department figures indicate that the percentage of workers over the traditional retirement age of 65 is at a record high. But, the figures show, job totals fell sharply for men under 55 during the recession and have only started to recover, while the proportion of women ages 25 to 54 with jobs also slid and is close to the lowest level of the last two decades.

?The fact of the matter is that this aging-but-not-yet-aged segment of the baby boomer class can?t afford to retire,? said David A. Rosenberg, the chief economist of Gluskin Sheff, a Canadian firm, noting that overall household net worth was 15 percent lower than at the prerecession peak. ?Dreams of the 5,000-square-foot McMansion being a viable retirement asset.

So why is any one voting for Barack Obama again? Any one who actually thinks that Obama has any coherent economic jobs growth plan is delusional. Every demographic has suffered under Obama and the more a demographic struggles with high unemployment like blacks, the more they back Obama. That?s a brilliant position.

EXIT QUESTION: So the older people are working longer and affecting the job prospects of the younger workers, this is even before changes have been made to the going broke Social Security plan. So what is going to happen when the government raises the retirement age from 65 to 68?
