7 Strategic Ways to Seek Startup PR | Business 2 Community

? by picturing_it

It feels great to be covered by the media, but unless there?s a business goal for getting press, it often doesn?t lead to any useful outcome ? aside from allaying your parents? fears that you don?t have a real job.

Often, the goal of PR for startups is not for the obvious reasons. Here are the 7 objectives I?ve seen startups reach using PR ? and how you can apply them to your strategy.

Goal #1: User or customer acquisition

This is the most common reason startups seek press, but it?s often misguided, or entrepreneurs? expectations are set too high. Viral and word-of-mouth marketing are usually more powerful channels for startups, but press is a great way to get the loop going. Every virus needs a patient zero.

Jason M. Lemkin, the CEO and founder of EchoSign wrote that press, ?mainly TechCrunch? along with networking, ?over time generated perhaps 25 percent of our first $100k [in annualized revenue] directly or indirectly.? After about a year, EchoSign?s top source of new revenue was viral.

Where to target: Whatever your perspective customers or users read. A tool for small business might pitch Inc., while a sports app could target ESPN.

Goal #2: Boosting SEO rankings

If you know anything about search engines post-AltaVista, you know your site will be ranked more highly based on how many credible sites link to it. Getting wide press coverage across a verity of press outlets is a great way to build links. If this is your goal, make sure the press outlet actually links to your company. If they don?t, email the journalist after the article is published and politely ask them add a link to their mention.

It?s even better if you can get linked to from articles that have SEO friendly-titles. Muck Rack still gets a lot of traffic from a 2009 article on Journalistics titled ?Where to Stalk Journalists on Twitter? since people keep discovering it for the first time via search.

Where to target: Focus on low-hanging fruit to build a lot of links. It?s often easier to get a quick hit in a publication?s online-only blog rather than its print or TV arms.

Goal #3: Building credibility and trust

Companies including Kickstarter and Mint list the press outlets that have covered them on their front page. Even Temple Run, one of the most popular iPhone games with over a million user ratings, lists press quotes on its App Store page. If they still need a credibility boost despite their tremendous scale, your tiny startup might too.

Where to target: Go for big names. It?s doubtful NPR is anywhere near the top traffic referrer for Kickstarter, but it?s the perfect endorsement for the crowd they?re targeting.

Goal #4: Attracting advertisers

If you?re a programmer building an ad-supported business, you?ll soon learn that media buyers don?t read Hacker News to learn how to do their job better like you do. They read their own set of ?ad rags? aimed at the mad men and women of today, and get ideas about which new companies to call up about their next ad buy. Even ubiquitous companies like Facebook and Twitter with little to gain in general notoriety from media will put a tremendous amount of effort to getting the right kind of coverage in Ad Age.

Where to target: Ad Age, Adweek and Digiday.

Goal #5: Raising money

Many venture capitalists and angel investors spend a tremendous about of time reading news about the industries they invest in. Union Square Venture?s Fred Wilson wrote, ?I do read news pretty much non stop throughout the day.? Prominent angel investor Chris Dixon went further and said, ?A person mentioning news that I didn?t know about, that is relevant to me, is a failure in my newsreading methods.?

A story can be aimed at investors perhaps by mentioning impressive usage metrics or key hires. VC associates who don?t have decision-making power may then reach out to you, so you?ll usually be better off getting introduced to a partner, but having well-timed press can generate more excitement as your meetings are happening.

Where to target: TechCrunch, PandoDaily, GigaOm and the Wall Street Journal.

Goal #6: Hiring strategies

Similar to investors, potential employees will want to get involved with companies they hear good things about. People actively looking for their next job will start reading almost as much as VCs.

Zendesk provided Business Insider with a tour of their office, which inevitably got turned into a slideshow with an impressive 70,000+ views. Potential customers won?t care much about Zendesk?s two fully-stocked kitchens, but it?s surely a nice recruiting tool.

Where to target: Whatever your potential employees read. If you?re hiring developers, aim for the sources that get quoted a lot in Hacker News and Techmeme.

Goal #7: Testing out a new idea

I recently met with the managing director of an accelerator that strives to adhere to the lean startup?s minimum viable product (MVP) philosophy. He lamented that the whole point of the MVP is to validate an idea or learn from users and customers, but many startups only get the products out to their friends and family for feedback. Without a bunch of users, and for consumer apps a wide variety of users, how can you know if your MVP?s right for the market? Imagine if Pinterest had relied only on their techie friends for feedback rather than getting it out more broadly across the country.

We?ve been able to use press coverage to quickly learn from users how to improve good products, and also to learn quickly if a product is a dud and needs to be completely rethought. The faster you get users the more quickly you can learn.

Where to target: Blogs that cover new product launches like The Next Web, BetaKit and Mashable.

PR?s not the answer to everything, and I?m not advocating you necessarily use PR for any of these functions since it depends on the dynamics of your startup.

But if you are going to use PR as many startups have done very effectively, it?s essential you know what you want to accomplish with it ? so that you get more than a Google Alert out of it.

Judge OKs settlement in BP class action suit

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A federal judge has given final approval to BP's settlement with businesses and individuals who lost money because of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP PLC has estimated it will pay $7.8 billion to resolve economic and medical claims from more than 100,000 businesses and individuals hurt by the nation's worst offshore oil spill. The settlement has no cap; the company could end up paying more or less.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier, who gave his preliminary approval in May, made it final in a 125-page ruling released Friday evening.

"None of the objections, whether filed on the objections docket or elsewhere, have shown the Settlement to be anything other than fair, reasonable, and adequate," he wrote.

BP and attorneys for the plaintiffs said they were pleased.

"We believe the settlement, which avoids years of lengthy litigation, is good for the people, businesses and communities of the Gulf and is in the best interests of BP's stakeholders," company spokesman Scott Dean said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. "Today's decision by the Court is another important step forward for BP in meeting its commitment to economic and environmental restoration efforts in the Gulf and in eliminating legal risk facing the company."

A statement from plaintiffs' attorneys Steve Herman and Jim Roy praised the settlement program's administrator, Pat Juneau.

"This settlement has ? and will continue to ? bring the people and businesses of the Gulf the relief they deserve," the attorneys wrote.

The April 2010 blowout of BP's Macondo well triggered an explosion that killed 11 rig workers and spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf, closing much of it for months to commercial and recreational fishing and shrimping.

There is still a lot of litigation left, including a trial to identify the causes of BP's blowout and assign percentages of fault to the companies involved, Barbier wrote. That trial is scheduled next year.

"This is a positive development, but my focus remains on holding BP and the other defendants accountable for the extraordinary economic and environmental damage inflicted on Alabama," said Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange in a statement. "I look forward to going to trial in February."

Barbier said the settlement averts worries that litigation could continue for 15 to 20 years, as it did after the Exxon Valdez and Amoco Cadiz oil spills, creating a secondary disaster for those affected.

Barbier has not ruled on a medical settlement for cleanup workers and others who say exposure to oil or dispersants made them sick.

The agreement covers people and businesses in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and some coastal counties in eastern Texas and western Florida, and in adjacent Gulf waters and bays.

BP has already begun paying claims before the law required it, and is doing so "in an impressive fashion," Barbier wrote. He said the claims center processed 4,500 claims a week in November and has authorized nearly $1.4 billion in payments, and BP also has paid about $405 million on nearly 16,000 claims during a transitional process that ended June 4.

Barbier noted that lawyers' fees won't come out of settlements: BP has agreed to pay them separately.

As part of the settlement, BP will pay $2.3 billion to cover seafood-related claims by commercial fishing vessel owners, captains and deckhands. That fund is the settlement's only limit, Barbier wrote. He said that it is about five times the average industry gross revenue from 2007 to 2009 and, according to evidence provided, more than 19 times the revenue the industry lost in 2010.

After Barbier's preliminary approval in May, thousands of people opted out of the settlement to pursue their cases individually. More than 1,700 changed their minds and asked to be added back in by a Dec. 15 deadline, Barbier said.

Still unresolved are environmental damage claims brought by the federal government and Gulf Coast states against BP and its partners on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, and claims against Switzerland-based rig owner Transocean Ltd. and Houston-based cement contractor Halliburton.

BP also has paid or agreed to pay settlements of:

?a record $4.5 billion in criminal penalties, including $1.3 million in fines. U.S District Judge Sarah Vance has scheduled a Jan. 29 hearing to accept or reject that plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which also includes guilty pleas to criminal charges involving the workers' deaths and to lying about the amount of oil spilled from the blown-out well.

?$525 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which accused it of misleading investors by lowballing the size of the spill.

Egypt's central bank governor quits

CAIRO (AP) ? State television says Egypt's central bank governor has resigned.

Farouq el-Oqdah's resignation is the second such high profile move on Saturday. Earlier on the day, Vice President Mahmoud Mekki resigned, saying he realized that politics did not suit his professional background as a judge.

The brief TV report did not say why el-Oqdah quit, but it ends days of media speculations about his intentions. Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his Prime Minister Hesham Kandil met with el-Oqdah earlier this week in what media reports said was an attempt to dissuade him from leaving.

His departure comes at a time when Egypt's pound has been losing value against the U.S. dollar and the postponement of a deal with the IMF for a much needed loan of $4.8 billion.

Canada gets human rights failing grade from Amnesty International

For Canada?s international human rights standing, 2012 was an annus horribilis.

This year three UN expert committees rated the country?s performance on meeting rights commitments ? and returned a failing grade.

?These mandatory reviews are carried out every four or five years, and it just happened that this year Canada was the focus of three,? said Alex Neve, who heads Amnesty International Canada. ?It?s a wake-up call that although we have things to be proud of, there are many fronts where we have long-standing issues that need to be addressed.?

An Amnesty report released Wednesday says that committees on racial discrimination, prevention of torture and children?s rights found ?a range? of ?ongoing and serious human rights challenges,? especially for indigenous peoples.

?By every measure, be it respect for treaty and land rights, levels of poverty, average life spans, violence against women and girls, dramatically disproportionate levels of arrest and incarceration or access to government services such as housing, health care, education, water and child protection, indigenous peoples across Canada continue to face a grave human rights crisis,? it said.

In response to Amnesty?s report, Rick Roth, spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, said, ?we are proud of the work we?ve done to advance freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law at home and around the world.?

The Amnesty report was one of three reports this week that pointed a warning finger at the treatment of aboriginal people.

The B.C. government?s final report from its Missing Women?s inquiry charged that there was a disproportionate number of missing or murdered indigenous women and girls on Vancouver?s downtown East Side from 1997-2002, and that their cases did not receive equal treatment by police.

In addition, Human Rights Watch?s women?s rights researcher Meghan Rhoad said that ?the epidemic of violence against indigenous women and girls in Canada is a national problem and it demands a national enquiry.?

Amnesty?s report calls for a new human rights agenda for Canada that includes all levels of government, beginning with ?a process of law reform . . . to establish a formal mechanism for transparent, effective and accountable implementation of Canada?s international human rights obligations.?

It says that UN recommendations have too often been ignored, and the implementation process is so ?cloaked in secrecy? that most Canadians have no idea whether the government plans to act on them.

The gap between commitment and action has grown in the past decade because of ?the complexities of federalism,? lack of political will and failure of leadership, it said.

The report welcomed changes to immigration and refugee laws in the past year that allowed for refugee appeals, but said they have also created two new classes of migrants and refugee claimants whose rights have been restricted.

Those designated ?irregular arrivals? ? such as the Sri Lankan refugee claimants who arrived in B.C. ? face mandatory detention, with intermittent reviews, and if accepted as refugees are barred from travelling outside Canada for five years.

Asylum seekers who come from so-called ?safe countries? are put on a fast-track refugee claim schedule and denied access to the new Refugee Appeal Division.

Under the new Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act, those who are accused of crimes, found guilty or labelled security threats ? including permanent residents who have lived in Canada for years ? will be deported without appeal. That now includes those who have committed relatively minor crimes with six-month sentences.

Meanwhile, Canadian law continues to allow deportation to countries where those rated as security threats may be tortured. And Ottawa?s refusal to bring the security certificate process in line with international fair trials standards means that people deemed security threats are denied access to key evidence and witnesses.

Amnesty said that the Harper government has ?dramatically undermined and rapidly dismantled? support for public policy debate in which diverse views are aired. At the same time, whistleblowers on nuclear safety, RCMP oversight, prisoner transfers in Afghanistan and veterans? rights have been ?dismissed or publicly derided by senior members of the government.?

Human rights have also been stonewalled in international trade, the report said. There are no binding legal standards for the conduct of Canadian companies operating overseas and human rights standards are seldom written into trade deals.

?It?s time for us to grapple with the fact that we have a broken system,? said Neve in an interview earlier this week. ?We don?t expect to be perfect, but it has gotten worse. How can we criticize Iran or Congo if we ourselves are failing to do what the UN is asking??

Canadian ISP Defends Decision Not To Oppose BitTorrent ...

Canadian ISP Defends Decision Not To Oppose BitTorrent Copyright Trolls

After being targeted by Voltage Pictures, the company behind the Hurt Locker and thousands of copyright troll lawsuits in the United States, Canadian ISP TekSavvy chose not to oppose the studio in court at yesterday?s hearing. TekSavvy CEO Marc Gaudrault said that after looking at the issue from every possible direction, he ultimately decided that the ISP could not get involved in disputing the merits of the case. Instead, TekSavvy gained a delay in proceedings to further notify customers.

As reported last week, Canadian anti-piracy company Canipre has been working with rightsholders to monitor BitTorrent networks for alleged infringers.

One of Canipre?s partners is Voltage Pictures, the company that launched a huge campaign in the United States targeting thousands of alleged sharers of the movie The Hurt Locker. Voltage?s settlement project has now spread to Canada and the first unlucky targets are customers of the ISP TekSavvy.

Voltage Pictures are claiming that around 2,000 TekSavvy users have been monitored sharing around two dozen of their titles including Tucker & Dale vs Evil. They asked the ISP to hand over their personal details so they can be approached for settlement, TekSavvy refused and the whole thing went to court in Toronto Monday.

However, while TekSavvy have gone out of their way to keep their customers informed (leading observers to believe that they would end up fighting Voltage Pictures to defend their customers? privacy) yesterday?s proceedings weren?t to go that way at all.

TekSavvy CEO Marc Gaudrault said that after spending a considerable amount of time the company had come to a decision that it would not to oppose the motion for discovery filed by Voltage.

?Everybody should know though that we have looked into all angles to determine what our position should be in this situation and after spending a significant amount of time and soliciting a considerable amount of advice from numerous respected sources, we found that we simply could not comment on the merits of the case,? Gaudrault explained.

The TekSavvy CEO says the company?s primary responsibility is to ensure that customers being targeted by Voltage Pictures get ?adequate notice? but added that the best way for people not to become involved in the case ?is to simply not engage in such [illegal file-sharing] activities.?

After learning there would be no fight, there was a backlash among some users which prompted a response from Gaudrault.

?If there was more I could do to protect your privacy, I would do it. I just don?t have a hook,? he said. ?Whatever behavior our customers engage in is not for us to scrutinize. If we wade into that, we are essentially going against Net Neutrality principles that we fought for.?

Gaudrault said that new Canadian copyright laws had tied his hands. He said that the Copyright Modernization Act shelters ISPs from liability from infringement based on the fact that they are mere intermediaries and nothing more. Getting further involved in the merits of the case could jeopardize that.

?The law is the law. I can?t defend against the law. The laws are there to defend against bad things. If we defend against laws, that makes us bad. We don?t do that. We?ve never done that,? he said.

But already the ISP?s decision is coming under scrutiny.

Writing on the Excess Copyright blog, lawyer Howard Knopf says that despite the ISP?s openness, questions will arise as to why TekSavvy isn?t opposing the motion as ISPs Shaw and Telus did (with success) in a music industry lawsuit dating back to 2004.

?In this regard, it is interesting to compare Voltage?s material with the BMG et al material filed in 2004 that was rejected by the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal at that time as inadequate in a very comparable situation, as a result of which we now have clear and binding appellate case law,? Knopf wrote.

One success that did come out of the hearing is that the judge apparently took notice of a letter filed by the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic which requested a delay in the court hearing Voltage?s motion for discovery.

CIPPIC argued that there had been insufficient time from the filing of the motion to yesterday?s hearing date for defendants to ?learn of the motion, retain, be advised by and instruct legal counsel,? and insufficient time for ?CIPPIC to prepare and file an application to intervene in the motion.?

Despite opposition from Voltage the hearing was adjourned until January 14, 2013. In the meantime TekSavvy could potentially change its mind on the decision not to oppose the motion but given Marc Gaudrault?s decisiveness since the weekend, that seems unlikely. Should that remain the case, any opposition will have to come from CIPPIC and the defendants.

Hatch seeks to re-invent the digital pet for the iPhone age

Digital pets are nothing new. Tamagotchi were a craze in the 2-bit, low-res days. Yet, back then, they were hindered by technology that was insufficient to fully realize the visions of their creators or the imagination of their users. Flash forward to 2012 and Impending, in collaboration with RealMac, aim to make the genre what it was always meant to be -- with Hatch.

If those names sound familiar, it's because they're the folks behind Clear, the delightfully simple, gesture-based task management app for the iPhone and Mac. Impending's Phill Ryu has long spoken about the potential for apps like this on modern platforms like iOS, and it's fantastic to see he's really going for it. With RealMac, and the talent of people like David Lanham from the Iconfactory behind him, it's got all the pieces in place to make just exactly what the tag line promises:

An app that loves you back.

Hatch won't ship until next year, but the video teaser above shows wonderful animation, engaging interactions (including tying into the built-in background music system), and a smart focus on building the app-to-user connection.

Digital devices have become emotional possessions. Pet apps have been tried before, and have worked before, but the connection has deepened with the capabilities of our devices. They know time, they know location, they know us.

It'll be interesting to see how much of that Hatch captures at launch, and how much of us the little creatures capture over time.

Head on over to the website below for an extra sneak-peak, and a way to started with the fun.

Love It Or Leave It: A Hello Kitty Dress From Hell

Listen, I know, sometimes we just want to be cute. Cute is fine, but in my estimation, this dress goes over the cliff from cute to infantilizing. This ?Kawaii Not?? dress from Modcloth puts a Hello Kitty face on your boobs, and just seems like an adult-man repeller. But what do you think?

Easy Things That You Can Do Before Buying a Condo ? Salt Lake ...

Nowadays, condos are selling like hotcakes in the market. Many people are taking advantage of buying a unit because of the practicability and accessibility. Others consider condos to be typically less expensive than similar single family homes in the market. They can either choose one or two bedroom varieties and this type of property can be easily evaluated and can be a great investment. People choose to live in a condo for a variety of reasons. The reason why it?s getting more popular these days because the comfort of living in a condo is far from owning a single family home in town. Location and time are considered by some of city goers and working people.

Here are some simple things you can do when you are looking for the right condo in the market.

Consider the location. When you are searching for the best condo in town, it is always a good start to know where it is really located. If your office of work is near your condo then that would be better because it allows you to save time and walking distance.

Know the different access to certain commercial buildings, offices, and major roads. As far as location is concerned, one thing that you could do when looking for a condo is to know the major roads for access at any time of the day. There should be a commercial building or any establishment that you can rely on whenever you need to buy something.

Your condo unit should have a good security. Remember that you will be having different neighbors for a certain area in the building. Make sure that the building has a security guard or special security features that you can count on and safety first.

Maintenance fee should be reasonable. When you are living in a condo, one advantage is that you will not be obliged to clean the hallways and other areas such as parking lot or the railing on the property since you will be paying for the maintenance fee. Just make sure it is cheaper and reasonable by any means.

The amenities should be available always. Would it be great if the building has a pool, a workout room and a clubhouse? Yes! When you pay for maintenance fee, you can use the amenities available? for a certain building. There will be no extra charges since you pay the maintenance fee and it is just part of living in a condo with luxury.

Know if the price is right. As you examine the unit, the features of the room should be reasonable enough for you to pay for it. Check if all the facilities are functioning properly. Ask for the details.

If you think these things satisfy your need then you can always buy a condo at the end of the day.

UBS may face $1 billion fine in rate-rigging case

4 hrs.

Swiss bank UBS faces a combined fine of about $1 billion to settle charges of rigging the Libor interest rate benchmark early next week, a person familiar with the situation said on Thursday.

Such a penalty would be more than double the $450 million fine levied on British bank Barclays?in June by U.S. and British regulators and would be the third massive U.S. fine to hit big European banks this week.

"The global settlement is about $1 billion. It's expected early next week, on Monday or Tuesday," the source said. UBS declined to comment.

UBS declined to comment. Britain's Financial Services Authority and the U.S. Department of Justice and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) all declined to comment.?

Too big to fail means too big for jail

Barclays was the first - and so far only - bank to settle charges of rigging the London interbank offered rate, known as Libor, a benchmark used for trillions of dollars worth of loans around the world. Tiny shifts in the rate, compiled from daily polls of bankers, could benefit dealers in complex products.

The fallout from the scandal forced Barclays' chairman and chief executive to quit and prompted a political and public backlash against standards in banking across Europe and the United States. That was partly due to details in the Barclays settlement showing how traders brazenly gamed the system.

Libor is used to price financial products worth more than$300 trillion worldwide and regulators across the world are investigating more than a dozen banks for alleged rigging of rates going back to 2005 or even earlier.

This week British police and anti-fraud officers made the first arrests in connection to the probe, detaining a former trader and two other men, sources said.

One of those arrested was former UBS and Citigroup trader Thomas Hayes, according to a source familiar with the situation. The two others worked at inter-dealer broker RP Martin, according to a separate source.

The fine will mark another blow to UBS, which has had atough 18 months after suffering a $2.3-billion loss in a rogue trading scandal, management upheaval and thousands of job cuts.

"I'm not sure how much more reputational damage can bedone to UBS," said Chris Wheeler, analyst at Mediobanca in London."They are rebuilding that slowly, but it won't help the wealth management businesswhen you see this as a headline."

Banks are keen to put such fines behind them as they attemptto rebuild credibility among politicians, the general public and investors followingthe financial crisis which forced taxpayers to bail out companies which hadgambled themselves into trouble.

After months of criticism about poor standards and a cultureof immorality, incompetence or both across the banking industry, banks' profitsand capital are also taking heavy hits and more fines for past malpracticeappear likely.

"The trend is this is now an ongoing cost of doingbusiness," said Wheeler at Mediobanca. "It looks like it's going tobe a drain on the banks for some time."

HSBC on Tuesday reached a $1.92 billion settlement with U.S.authorities over money laundering, the highest ever fine on a bank, a day after another London-based bank, Standard Chartered, agreed to pay $327 million for violating U.S. sanctions against Iran, Sudan and other states, adding to an earlier $340 million for similar breaches of regulations.

Deutsche Bank, Germany's flagship lender, was raided on Wednesday by about 500 German tax inspectors and police, who arrested five staff in a probe linked to a tax scam involving the trading of carbon permits.

Britain's Royal Bank of Scotland is also expected to reach a settlement on Libor manipulation shortly.

Investigators are assessing whether banks used responses to the daily survey of the rates they would offer to other banks to try to nudge Libor, perhaps by only a few hundredths of a percentage point. Such a move could still benefit their own trades in bonds or more complex deals linked to that rate.

Banks found guilty also face civil lawsuits from those they traded with. Some borrowers complain they paid more interest than they should have, although others may have paid less.

Reuters' parent company Thomson Reuters collects information from banks and uses it to calculate Libor rates according to specifications drawn up by the British Bankers Association.

'Liquid that thinks:' Swarm of ping-pong-ball-sized robots created

Dec. 14, 2012 ? University of Colorado Boulder Assistant Professor Nikolaus Correll likes to think in multiples. If one robot can accomplish a singular task, think how much more could be accomplished if you had hundreds of them.

Correll and his computer science research team, including research associate Dustin Reishus and professional research assistant Nick Farrow, have developed a basic robotic building block, which he hopes to reproduce in large quantities to develop increasingly complex systems.

Recently the team created a swarm of 20 robots, each the size of a Ping Pong ball, which they call "droplets." When the droplets swarm together, Correll said, they form a "liquid that thinks."

To accelerate the pace of innovation, he has created a lab where students can explore and develop new applications of robotics with basic, inexpensive tools.

Similar to the fictional "nanomorphs" depicted in the "Terminator" films, large swarms of intelligent robotic devices could be used for a range of tasks. Swarms of robots could be unleashed to contain an oil spill or to self-assemble into a piece of hardware after being launched separately into space, Correll said.

Correll plans to use the droplets to demonstrate self-assembly and swarm-intelligent behaviors such as pattern recognition, sensor-based motion and adaptive shape change. These behaviors could then be transferred to large swarms for water- or air-based tasks.

Correll hopes to create a design methodology for aggregating the droplets into more complex behaviors such as assembling parts of a large space telescope or an aircraft.

In the fall, Correll received the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development award known as "CAREER." In addition, he has received support from NSF's Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research program, as well as NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

He also is continuing work on robotic garden technology he developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009. Correll has been working with Joseph Tanner in CU-Boulder's aerospace engineering sciences department to further develop the technology, involving autonomous sensors and robots that can tend gardens, in conjunction with a model of a long-term space habitat being built by students.

Correll says there is virtually no limit to what might be created through distributed intelligence systems.

"Every living organism is made from a swarm of collaborating cells," he said. "Perhaps some day, our swarms will colonize space where they will assemble habitats and lush gardens for future space explorers."

Syria state media: Blast near Damascus kills 16

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's state news agency says a bomb blast near the capital, Damascus, has killed 16 people. It says at least half of those killed are women and children.

The SANA news agency says a car packed with explosives blew up on Thursday near a school in a residential part of the southwestern suburb of Qatana.

The report quotes medics from a nearby hospital as saying 16 people were killed, including seven children and "a number" of women. It says nearly two dozen people were wounded.

Anti-regime activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime in March 2011.

Cheese: Not as newfangled as we thought

Researchers have linked ancient milk residue (thousands of years-old) to early forms of cheese-making. The scientists say this research provides new insights into the human diet and food production technologies.?

Milk production and dairy processing allowed early farmers to produce food without slaughtering precious livestock, and making cheese?turned milk into a less perishable food that was more digestible for a population who at the time would have been intolerant to the lactose contained in milk.

Researchers from the?University of Bristol in Britain, with colleagues in the?United States?and?Poland, analyzed fatty acids embedded in prehistoric pottery from the Polish region of Kuyavia, and found they had been used to separate milk into fat-rich curds for?cheese and lactose-containing whey.

"The presence of milk residues in sieves ... constitutes the earliest direct evidence for?cheese-making," said M?lanie Salque from?Bristol, one of the authors of the research, which was published in?the journal Nature.

Peter Bogucki, another researcher involved in the work, said: "Making cheese?allowed them to reduce the lactose content of milk, and we know that, at that time, most of the humans were not tolerant to lactose."

Milk residues have been found at ancient sites up to 8,000 years old in?Turkey?and?Libya, but there was no evidence that the milk had been processed into cheese.

Until now, the earliest evidence of?cheese-making came from depictions of milk processing in murals several thousand years younger than the pottery fragments.

The researchers believe other vessels found in the same region were used for other specific purposes. Jars lined with beeswax were probably for storing water, and pottery containing the remnants of carcass fats was probably used for cooking meat.

"It is truly remarkable, the depth of insights into ancient human diet and?food processing technologies?these ancient fats preserved in archaeological ceramics are now providing us with," said?Richard Evershed, who heads the?Bristol?team.

City's Hottest Startups To Compete At The TechCrunch Barcelona ...

Tomorrow we?ll throw a TechCrunch Mini Meetup in Barcelona, one of the most internationally-minded cities in Europe. Below you?ll find out schedule, agenda and here you can grab a free ticket to the party] as the main free event is now full. It?s because of its diversity that the city has managed to attract a burgeoning number of startup entrepreneurs wooed by the ability of the city to attract talent, in part because of the climate and lifestyle. When you can live just about anywhere and create an Internet company, you may as well do it in a fun place to live. It?s a trend we?ve seen even San Francisco succumb to, as startups move back form the rather bland campuses of the Valley to the vibrancy of the SF?s city living. And Europe?s flexible corporate laws now allow startups to be based almost anywhere.

The #TCBarcelona Meetup is now sold out (tickets were free and were widely previewed such as here) and we will be assessing 15 pre-selected startups that submitted] their credentials first in a session involving investors, and finally in an open pitching competition for the finalists. We?ll also have panels discussing how Barcelona can capitalise on its position. If London, Stockholm and Berlin are hot right now, how does Barcelona ? which really is ?hot? ? join the party?

And it?s already got the building blocks. Initiatives like District 22@, the Barcelona Tech Bridges to Silicon Valley networking events, and Barcelona.IO, have been creating a booming networking scene. That?s why we are putting together a TechCrunch Mini Meetup there. Here?s our schedule for the day:

LOCATION:
Barcelona Activa, Carrer Llacuna, 162, Barcelona [Google Map]
Please bring your ticket and photo id. The main event is completely sold out. We?re not able to let anyone in without a valid ticket (which were free).

Otherwise, please feel free to get tickets for the after party which are listed below.

AFTER PARTY

It will be at the coolest new bar in Barcelona, Oca?a, in Pla?a Reial. We will be providing the first few beers thanks to our sponsors. This is where we will kick off from 8pm, and where the networking will take place. Ticket holders will be able to grab a free beer. Others are welcome to turn up, just won?t get a free beer. DJs wil be kicking off at 10:30pm to fully celebrate the Barcelona Startup scene. All people who have a ticket for the official meetup proceedings will be able to reuse that ticket for the after party. If you have a ticket already from the daytime meetup, you do not need another ticket for the after party.
